SO CLOSE TO THE BREAK: The Hudson Valley Renegades finish their six-game series with the Greenville Drive this afternoon at Dutchess Stadium. Following the completion of the game, the Renegades, along with every other MiLB team, are off for four days to celebrate the All-Star Break. It is the first time there will be a Minor League All-Star Break since 2019, although there will be no Minor League All-Star Games.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Hudson Valley Renegades scored their first walk-off win of the season on Saturday, 5-4 over the Greenville Drive in 10 innings. Eric Wagaman delivered the winning hit with a single to right-center, scoring pinch-runner Aaron Palensky. The win salvaged a strong start for T.J. Sikkema, who struck out 10 in a career-high 5.1 innings.
THE MARTIAN INCOMING: On Saturday, the New York Yankees announced their intention to promote OF Jasson Domínguez to Hudson Valley following the All-Star Break. Domínguez, 19, is ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the Yankees system, and the No. 39 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline.
REHAB ALERT: New York Yankees catcher Ben Rortvedt continues his MLB rehab assignment tonight for the Renegades. Rortvedt is the second MLB rehabber with the Renegades in the Yankees era (Luis Severino in '21) and the fourth-ever in team history. He becomes the first home rehabber for HV since Doug Waechter pitched four games at The Dutch in 2007. In four games of his rehab assignment so far, Rortvedt is 1-for-12 with three walks and three runs scored.
A LITTLE EXTRA: With Saturday's win, the Renegades have won four straight extra-inning games, and are 5-2 in extras this year. Their last loss in extra frames came on May 28 vs Rome.
LUCKY No. 13: Renegades INF Tyler Hardman hit his 13th home run of the season on Friday night against Greenville. Not only is that the most on the team this season, but it ranks tied for sixth-most in a single season in Renegades History. Dan Grummitt holds the single-season record with 22, while Josh Breaux (17), Anthony Volpe (15) and Everson Pereira (14) all hit more in 2021.
TWO RECORDS WITH ONE STONE: With his steal of second base in the third inning on Friday, Cooper Bowman set two new stolen base records for the Hudson Valley Renegade. With his 34th steal of the season, Bowman passed Jake Fraley for the most steals in a single season (2016) and career for Hudson Valley. Bowman is one of just three players in franchise history to swipe 30 bags in a season, joining Fraley and Michael Ross (2007). James Nelson is right behind Bowman for the all-time steals record with 32.
SWEENEY ON A TEAR: Since May 25 when his slash line bottomed out at .176/.261/.333, Trey Sweeney has been on a tear, hitting .280/.376/.478 across 41 games to raise his line to .240/.332/.422. One of the biggest keys for Sweeney during the stretch has been how dramatically his K% has dropped, from 31.3% before June 3, to 21.9% since May 25, while his walk rate has spiked from 8.7% to 11.7%.
PINSTRIPED PITCHING PROWESS: Strength in pitching is a theme across the New York Yankees minor league system and the Renegades are no exception. The staff sports a 3.57 ERA on the season, the best in the South Atlantic League. It also ranks as the fourth-best staff ERA in High-A, and the ninth-best in the minor leagues. All four Yankees affiliated teams rank in the top 20 in the minors in ERA -- Somerset 3.38, 3rd; Tampa 3.68, 13th; Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 3.86, 20th.
I'M NEW IN TOWN: With Everson Pereira moving up to Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, the Yankees promoted OF Grant Richardson from Single-A Tampa on Friday. Richardson was a 17th round pick of the Yankees in 2021 out of Indiana University.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE STEALS: The Renegades stole 11 bases in last Wednesday's game at Jersey Shore, the most of any team in the minor leagues this season. It was the most in a game since the Hillsboro Hops (ARZ, A+) stole 11 against the Everett AquaSox (SEA) on May 7, 2021. Before that, the last full-season MiLB team to steal 11 was the Burlington Bees against the Fort Wayne TinCaps in an 18-inning game on April 16, 2014. Those are the only three instances of 11 steals in a single game in full-season leagues since 2005. Both Hudson Valley and Everett accomplished their prolific steal totals without being caught.
LET'S TALK MORE ABOUT THE STEALS: With Carlos Narvaez's steal of third base in the seventh inning last Wednesday, the Renegades stole their collective 150th base of the season to set a new franchise record. It took only 77 games to break the record that was set by the 2021 Renegades in 120 games. The Gades enter play Friday with 172 stolen bases on the year, third-most in the minors behind Down East (A, TEX -- 204) and Lake Elsinore (A, SD -- 185).
HAVE I MENTIONED THE STEALS?: Not only did the Renegades set a new club record with 11 steals on Wednesday, but they also stole more bases in a single game than any South Atlantic League team has since 2005. Since that point, only three other times has a SAL team stolen 10 bases, with the most recent instance coming on July 1, 2013 when the Rome Braves stole 10 at the Charleston RiverDogs.
