Hot Rods Game Notes

July 17, 2022 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

As a reminder, the Hot Rods are off Monday-Thursday in the coming week for the MLB All-Star break. The team will begin a three-game series against the Asheville Tourists on Friday, July 22 at Bowling Green Ballpark.

First time for Everything... For the first time this season, the Hot Rods have lost a series that wasn't shortened by weather following Rome's 5-3 win over Bowling Green on Saturday. Heriberto Hernandez recorded his 15th multi-hit game of the season and Alika Williams drove in two runs for his 10th multi-RBI game of the year. Nathan Wiles took his first loss of the season while Anthony Molina tossed three innings, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Yesterday's Notes... Wiles allowed his first walk since May 25 against Brooklyn... He's issued five walks in his pro career that spans 84.1 innings... His five strikeouts were one short of his season and career-high... Wiles tied his career-high with 5.0 innings of work... Williams homered for the first time since June 26... He hit two home runs in that game against Greenville... Williams had his 10th multi-RBI game of 2022... He's got a four-game hit streak... Hernandez had his 15th multi-hit game of the season... Simon has a three-game hit streak...

One vs Two all Over Again... Bowling Green makes their shortest road trip for the second time this season, beginning the series four games ahead of the Rome Braves. In the second half, however, the Hot Rods trail the Braves by a game and a half. BG won the final three games in Rome in the first week of June to clinch a pivotal series in their quest to clinch the South Division's first half title. Heriberto Hernandez has led BG against the Braves this season, hitting .342 with three home runs and 11 RBIs and playing in all 12 games against Rome, and leads the team in nearly every offensive category vs. Rome

Clinched!... BG finished the first half leading their division for the third time in club history, clinching a playoff spot with 2018's Midwest League Champions and again in 2011. (there were no halves in 2021). The 2011 team finished the first leg of the season with a 41-29 record while the 2018 Hot Rods set a franchise record with 47 wins in the first half and a record of 47-22. The 2022 club became the third Hot Rods team to the 40-win mark in a half.

Prepared for the Postseason... The 2022 Playoff structure looks a little different than last season's "High-A East" setup. The season is split into two halves, with the first-half ending after games on June 23. Each division's team with the best record will earn a berth, with the divisional first and second-half champions facing one another in a three-game series in the postseason. The winners of those series will be crowned division champions, with the two remaining teams set to face one another in a three-game championship series. The Hot Rods clinched a playoff spot after winning the South Division in the first half. They will be joined by the first-half North Division Winners in the Aberdeen IronBirds.

Manzardo Keeps Mashing... For the second week in a row, a Hot Rods hitter has been named South Atlantic League Player of the Week. This time, it was Kyle Manzardo, who hit .444 with two homers and six RBI against the Crawdads. Both his home runs came in the first inning of separate games, kickstarting the Hot Rods offense and helping them cruise to victory. He recorded a hit in all but one of the five games in the series and scored four runs in the final four games of the series, finishing things off with a 3-4, performance with a career-best four RBIs on Sunday.
