May 19, 2023 - Eastern League (EL)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
Paced by another strong start by lefty Brant Hurter, the Erie SeaWolves shut out the Harrisburg Senators 6-0 in front of capacity crowd on Friday night at FNB Field.
Both starters, Hurter and Alemao Hernandez for the Senators, were strong out of the gate as each started by hurling four scoreless.
Erie broke through in the top of the fifth. Grant Witherspoon led off and singled, extending his hitting streak to a season-high eight straight. Jake Holton then walked and Andrew Navigato singled, loading the bases. With one out, Luis Santana sent a bouncer to short. The Senators recorded the out at second but a throwing error by the second baseman J.T. Arruda allowed two runs to score for a 2-0 lead.
Erie threatened in the sixth and seventh innings against the Harrisburg pen but could not extend the lead.
They would put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth. Reliever Evan Lee hit Colt Keith then walked Wenceel Perez and Witherspoon, loading the bases with one out. Harrisburg brought in righty Orlando Ribalta who promptly gave up a two-run double to Holton, extending the lead to 4-0. With two outs, pinch hitter Daniel Cabrera delivered a two-run single to right making it 6-0.
The Erie bullpen was phenomenal as the trio of Billy Lescher, Jake Higginbotham and Tim Naughton combined to keep the Senators off the scoreboard, preserving the shutout. Lescher and Higginbotham combined to shut down the Senators in order over three innings. Naughton ran into trouble allowing a single and a double to start the ninth. He then got Harrisburg in order, ending the game.
Hurter (2-1) earned the win hurling five scoreless, allowing four hits with no walks and four strikeouts. He's worked five innings in three of his past four starts and is 2-1 with a no-decision over that span.
Hernandez (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.
