Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
Lethbridge, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes finished a five game week which saw them take six of a possible ten points including an overtime win over the Medicine Hat Tigers and a 4-2 win over the highly touted Calgary Hitmen in Calgary. The Hurricanes will now embark on a three game East division road trip which will see them take on Brandon, Prince Albert and Saskatoon. The Canes enter the week with a record of 13-22-3-1 placing them 11th in the WHL Eastern Conference standings and 13 points out of a playoff spot.
Storm Warnings:
- Answering the Call: Luca Sbisa represented his country as team captain of Switzerland at the U-20 World Junior Hockey Championships in Saskatchewan from Dec.26 - Jan.5. The Swiss advanced to the WJHC semi finals with a 3-2 OT win over Russia before a 6-1 semi final loss to Canada. Sbisa has also been selected for the Swiss Olympic team for Vancouver 2010
- A whole lot of "Rowsie": The Canes acquired goaltender Linden Rowat from the Regina Pats early in 09-10. Rowat has 179 WHL regular season games under his belt and an amazing 90-68-9-12 record with 10 shutouts including a 5-2-2-0 record with Lethbridge. Rowat currently holds a 3.07 GAA and a.905 save percentage and returned from injury on Jan. 3rd/10 @ Calgary (4-2W)
- Leaders: Carter Bancks - 35 points; Mitch Maxwell - 17 goals; Carter Bancks - 24 assists; Carter Bancks - 0.92 Pts/G; Carter Bancks, Austin Fyten, Mitch Maxwell and Brent Henke - 4 PPGs; Carter Bancks, Austin Fyten & Mitch Maxwell- 1 SHG; Graham Hood - +9; Mike Reddington - 96 PIMs
- Money in the Bancks: Captain Carter Bancks has tallied a team leading 35 points (11G, 24A) in 38 games in 09-10
- The "New Kid" - WHL rookie Mitch Maxwell leads all Canes rookies with 27 points (17G, 10A) in 37 games his 17 goals are good for fourth in the WHL rookie goal scoring race. The last Hurricanes rookie to notch more then 17 goals in his rookie season was Carolina first round draft pick and former Lethbridge forward Zach Boychuk, who tallied 18 in his rookie season (05-06).
- Vintage '91: Several 91-born players are having career years in 09-10; including Cam Braes (11G,20A), Austin Fyten (13G, 9A) and defenseman Brennan Yadlowski (2G, 22A)

The Lethbridge Hurricanes will kick off their three game road swing through the East division with a Wednesday night matchup in Brandon. The Canes have a 1-1-0-0 record against the Memorial Cup hosts this season with a win over the Wheaties in Brandon on October 16th. On that night the Canes tallied a 2-1 win with the first goal of the game coming off the stick of defenseman Max Ross. The home side would then battle back with a goal in the second, but Lethbridge held their ground as veteran goaltender Linden Rowat put on a sizzling performance with 15 saves in the second period alone. Finally, it was Carter Ashton who tallied the game winner and would finish the night with a two point (1G,1A) performance to earn him 3rd star honors while Rowat was awarded the first star for his 34 save victory.

GAME NIGHT Lethbridge @ Prince Albert 6:00PM
Lethbridge will continue their roadie with a stop in P.A. to take on the Raiders. The Hurricanes will look to improve on their 0-2-0-0 record against the Pirates this season. The last meeting between these two clubs came on November 28th in P.A. and resulted in a disappointing 6-1 loss. Luca Sbisa tallied his first of the 2009-10 campaign five minutes into the second period, but a frustrated Canes squad; played from behind all evening and were out shot 48-30 on the night. Rookie goalie Brandon Anderson saw 31 shots in two periods of action and allowing four goals before being relieved by Finnish goaltender Ville Kolppanen. Kolppanen made 15 saves on 17 P.A. shots in the final 20 minutes. The Canes power play was 0 for 2 on the evening while the P.A. power play went 2 for 4 en route to the 6-1 victory.

Saturday, January 9th
GAME NIGHT Lethbridge @ Saskatoon 6:05PM
The Canes will wrap up a three game in four night stint with a Saturday night matchup in Saskatoon. The Canes have played the Blades very close this season, with both of their previous meetings resulting in a single point. The Canes suffered a 3-2 OT loss on October 10th in Lethbridge and a 3-2 shootout loss on November 27th in Saskatoon. The Hurricanes are quickly developing a healthy rivalry with the Eastern conference leading Blades, after eliminating them from the 2009 WHL Playoffs in a seven game opening round series.
