SASKATOON -- The third time was the charm for Team USA.
After blowing third-period leads to Canada in the previous two meetings, the U.S. crumbled again in the world junior gold-medal game.
But John Carlson scored his second of the game 4:21 into overtime to give the U.S. a wild 6-5 victory.
The loss ended Canada's streak of world junior crowns at five straight and gave the Americans their first title since 2004 -- when they also beat Canada in the final.
Jordan Eberle singlehandedly brought the Canadians back from the brink of defeat late in the third period.
Eberle scored twice in 1:14 -- the second with just 1:35 remaining in regulation -- to force extra time.
The U.S. thought they had it won when they scored twice in 2:11 in the third period to seize control.
Jerry D'Amigo scored on an odd-man rush before the heartbreaker came moments later.
Canadian goaltender Jake Allen inexplicably kicked a dump-in back into the slot and Team USA captain Derek Stepan made no mistake.
Allen, who looked shaky throughout, was replaced by Martin Jones.
