Spokane Chiefs News Release

A Spokane Chief will be coming home with gold. The United States, with the Chiefs' Tyler Johnson representing his country, will play Canada and Spokane captain Jared Cowen tonight for the World Junior Hockey Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The game will be a rematch of Canada's 5-4 shootout win on New Year's Eve. In five games, Cowen is +5 with one assist. In six games, Johnson has three goals, five points and is a +5. Canada will be playing in their ninth consecutive gold medal game and will be trying to win it for a record sixth time. The last time someone else won gold was when the United States won it in 2004.

The gold medal game can be seen on the NHL Network (Comcast channel 419) at 5:00 PST.

Stefan Ulmer (see below) and Team Austria lost to Latvia on Monday in the relegation final. In six games Ulmer had six assists and 10 penalty minutes.

ULMER EXPECTED TO BE IN LINEUP ON TUESDAY NIGHT

Chiefs' defenseman Stefan Ulmer is expected to be in the lineup on Tuesday night when Spokane hosts the Saskatoon Blades at 7:00 in the Spokane Arena. Ulmer recently appeared with Team Austria at the World Junior Hockey Championships scoring six points in six games. The 19-year-old hasn't played with the Chiefs since December 18th and has missed the last five Spokane games.

Tuesday's match-up against Saskatoon will be their only meeting of the season. Saskatoon will be playing their fifth game in a row in the U.S. and will be looking to sweep the division after wins in Seattle, Everett, Portland and Tri-City.

The game will also feature the top two goaltenders in the WHL as Saskatoon's Steven Stanford comes in with a 2.30 goals against average which just edge's Spokane's James Reid at 2.32.

It will mark Saskatoon's first visit to the Spokane Arena since October 19th, 2007. Spokane traveled to Saskatoon last year and dropped a 2-1 decision. Mitch Wahl, from Ryan Letts, scored Spokane's only goal. The game was scoreless through two periods. In 2007-08 the Chiefs Jared Cowen broke a 2-2 tie 10:13 into the third period and helped give Spokane a 3-2 win. Spokane has 13 wins in the last 18 meetings against Saskatoon, dating back to 1995-96. Prior to last year's loss, Spokane had won three in a row. The Chiefs are 2-2 against the East Division with wins over Prince Albert and Regina and losses to Brandon and Swift Current. The last team from the East to visit Spokane will be Moose Jaw when the Warriors visit on February 10th.
