LETHBRIDGE - On another night, with a healthy defensive corps, the Red Deer Rebels could very well have pulled this one out.

But on a night when the normally light-scoring Rebels potted five goals, a lack of healthy defencemen and a few errors all added up to an 8-5 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in a WHL Central Division contest on Monday night at the Enmax Centre.

"We gave ourselves a chance," said Rebels assistant coach Ryan Colville. "With a really good second period we gave ourselves a chance going into the third, But we didn't quite stick to our game plan and gave up a couple early goals."

With the game knotted at 4-4, Hurricanes forward Justin Hall jumped on a rebound and notched his second of the game at 3:43 of the final frame, and Jett Jones scored on a deflection six minutes later to give the hosts a two-goal lead.

Ben King potted his second of the evening from the high slot to cut the Lethbridge lead to one, but the 'Canes put it away on a point shot from Trevor Thurston and an empty-net goal off the stick of Ty Nash.

With just four healthy defencemen and forward Jace Isley playing on the blueline, the Rebels couldn't stave off the 'Canes' attack.

"We've shown we can play with anybody for stretches even while short-handed," said Colville. "But we just have to keep it simple for a full 60 minutes and we haven't been able to do that quite yet."

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 2-0 lead just past the midway point of the opening period on goals from Zack Stringer and Hall, but Kalan Lind got the Rebels on the board when he buried a rebound of an Arshdeep Bains volley.

The teams traded goals for the remainder of the first period with Alex Cotton beating netminder Byron Fancy with a five-on-three marker and King replying on the power play in the final minute, cashing a back-door feed from Bains.

Red Deer was the better team in the middle frame with a 17-7 edge in shots and pulled even at 3-3 when Ethan Rowland buried a rebound.

From there, Thurston scored on a point shot to make it 4-3 for the hosts before Bains replied with a power-play tally late in the period.

"I thought it was a bit of a slow start for us but as the game got going I thought our guys started playing hard," said Colville.

The line of King, Lind and Bains was prevalent in the contest. King had a four-point night with two goals and two helpers, Bains scored once and added three assists and Lind had one goal and one assist.

"That line was pretty dominant every time they were on the ice," said Colville.

"Lind has been playing center ever since he got here, which is a hard position for a 15-year-old night in and night out. We thought we'd give him a chance on the wing tonight and he was good, very aggressive on pucks.

"He supported King and Bains and they created a lot of offence."

Red Deer was two-for-nine on the power play while Lethbridge was two-for-four with a man advantage.

Fancy made 23 saves for the Rebels. Lethbridge netminder Bryan Thomson stopped 29 shots.
