April 13 Preview: Brandon Wheat Kings vs Moose Jaw Warriors
April 13, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Brandon Wheat Kings (11-3-2-0) take on the Moose Jaw Warriors (7-8-1-0) this afternoon at 5 PM in what will be the third meeting for the two teams this season. Brandon's coming off their first back-to-back losses this season while the Warriors enter today's game having split their last two.
Last time they met
March 24 - Brandon Wheat Kings 8 - Moose Jaw Warriors 2
The Wheat Kings dominated from the opening puck drop, leading 4-1 after the opening period and scoring Warriors goalie Boston Bilous out of the crease. Brett Mirwald took over in goal for the Warriors but had similar luck as the Wheat Kings doubled their score in the second and rookies Nate Danielson and Logen Hammett both scored their first markers of their young WHL careers. The game's first star was given to Jake Chiasson (2G-1A), Danielson (1G-2A) earned the second star and Rylan Thiessen (3A) the third. Connor Ungar made 27 saves in the win.
Off The Draw
The Wheat Kings lost the battle at the faceoff dot last time they played the Warriors, winning just 23 of 67 (34%) draws. In their loss against the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday, the Wheat Kings had a respectable 45% success rate on faceoffs but certain opponents have given them trouble so far this season. In the first meeting of the Warriors and Wheat Kings on March 12, Brandon's opening game of the season, they split faceoff wins almost evenly with a 49% success rate for the Wheaties. Although it doesn't necessarily seem to determine the outcome of the game, it will be interesting to see how the Wheat Kings perform in faceoffs today after being outdrawn so badly by the Warriors last time they met.
East Division Standings
With only 8 games left in the season, the race to the top of the Division is beginning to look like a three-horse race. Winnipeg's win over the Regina Pats yesterday means they've climbed into a tie at second in the standings with the Wheat Kings after Brandon was leading the division just three days ago. The Wheat Kings will face the ICE tomorrow night in the second game of a back-to-back and a sweep of their two day schedule would put them in sole possession of second place.
Leading Scorers
The Wheat Kings held Warriors leading scorer Eric Alarie off the scoresheet last time they played but Brandonite Tate Popple has been a scoring threat in both games so far this season for Moose Jaw. Popple has (2G-1A) against the Wheat Kings including the overtime game winner on March 12th.
Ridly Greig had a late third period goal on Sunday and he assisted on Jake Chiasson's second period goal after having his 8 game point streak stopped on April 9th against Regina.
Ben McCartney leads the Wheat Kings in goals and has the third-most multi-point games so far this season with 5. Nolan Ritchie and Greig both have 6 multi-point games each.
The Last 5 Games
With a week before the winning number is drawn, the Wheat Kings bi-weekly 50/50 pot currently sits at $620. Every dollar earned through 50/50 supports the Wheat Kings Foundation, helping the Wheat Kings athletes access post-secondary education. Fans can purchase tickets in $10, $20 and $50 increments for a chance to win while helping support the club > www.wheatkings.com/50-50
