McClennon Leads the Way as ICE Beat Pats 3-1
April 13, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The Winnipeg ICE take their five-game win streak into a matchup with the Regina Pats, who have won two games in a row, including a 2-1 OT win against the division leading Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday. It'll be a tough test for the Pats as they begin life without their star rookie Connor Bedard, who is off to the U-18 Championships with Team Canada in Texas. Carl Stankowski looked to give the ICE their sixth straight victory, as they continue to battle at the top of the standings with the Wheat Kings and Saskatoon Blades. Stankowski faced-off against Roddy Ross, who started in the crease for Regina.
It took the ICE 5:09 to open the scoring as Karter Prosofsky sprung Conor Geekie on a breakaway and the ICE forward made no mistake by burying it glove side past Ross. The Pats would tie it up at 16:08 as Zack Smith drove wide on the power-play and found Logan Nijhoff in front of the net who rifled it past Stankowski. Winnipeg would retake the lead a minute later as Connor McClennon found the loose puck during a scrum in front of Ross, and shot it past the Pats' net minder for the power-play marker. The goal marked McClennon's 100th career WHL point (44G 56A), all coming with the ICE.
Winnipeg added to to their lead in the second frame as Peyton Krebs pulled off a no-look backhand pass to McClennon who ripped it top corner from the slot, past Ross' glove hand. That goal was the only one of the period, as Winnipeg led 23-14 in shots after two. The ICE would bring that lead into the last minutes of the third, as the Pats had a some good chances as well as a breakaway opportunity but Stankowski stood tall and turned aside 22 shots for the 3-1 win.
Winnipeg is back in action for a big test against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday night at 9:00pm CT.
