Hunwick, Sobotka Recalled To Boston

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have recalled defenseman Matt Hunwick and center Vladimir Sobotka. Both players are expected to join Boston today and travel with the team to face the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday night. With the moves, Providence has 23 players on its roster, including 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.

Hunwick, 23, began this season in Providence, appearing in two games while earning two assists. The blue-liner is coming off of a rookie season split between Boston and Providence, notching one assist in 13 games over four call-ups to the big club and 23 points (2g, 21a) in 55 contests for the P-Bruins. Hunwick's first and only career NHL point as it stands came on December 8, 2007 at the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to turning pro, Hunwick played in 163 games for the University of Michigan Wolverines, scoring 24 goals and adding 73 assists for 97 points. The two-year captain at Michigan and native of nearby Sterling Heights was drafted by Boston 224th overall in the seventh round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Sobotka, 21, also began the year in Providence, posting back-to-back multiple-point games in a pair of P-Bruins wins. The second-year center scored the game-winning-goal Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Springfield Falcons. He leaves Providence leading the team with two goals and four points through two games. Sobotka split the 2007-08 campaign between Boston and Providence, appearing in 48 regular season games with the big club while amassing seven points (g, 6a), plus another six Stanley Cup Playoff contests, where he scored two goals versus Montreal. The center's first NHL point came on December 12, 2007, recording an assist against the Atlanta Thrashers. During Sobotka's second call-up, he enjoyed several other NHL firsts, including his first goal at the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 13, 2008, his only multiple-point game with two assists April 4, 2008 against the Ottawa Senators, his playoff debut at Montreal on April 12, 2008 and the first of two playoff goals five nights later. A native of Trebic, Czech Republic, Sobotka had 20 points (10g, 10a) and a plus-12 rating in 18 regular season games for the P-Bruins a year ago. He was drafted by Boston 106th overall in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
