Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, announced this evening that the Boston Bruins have assigned rookie defenseman Matt Hunwick to Providence. The P-Bruins again have 23 players on their roster, including 13 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders.
Hunwick, 22, is a first-year product out of the University of Michigan, where he spent the last four seasons playing for the Wolverines. The blue-liner was recalled by Boston on November 9, making his National Hockey League debut for the Bruins in a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at the TD Banknorth Garden the following night. He went scoreless in the contest while seeing 15:37 minutes of ice-time. Prior to his call up, Hunwick began the season in Providence, appearing in nine games and recording four assists with a plus-seven rating, currently ranked second on the club. He registered his first career helper on October 13 on the road against the Rochester Americans, the first of three straight games in which he produced a point. During his 163-game collegiate career, Hunwick scored 24 goals and added 73 assists for 97 points, a personal-high 30 points coming in his junior season. The two-year captain at Michigan and native of nearby Sterling Heights was drafted by Boston in the seventh round, 224th overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
The Atlantic Division-leading Providence Bruins open the home portion of their season at the newly renovated Dunkin' Donuts Center on Wednesday against the Portland Pirates at 7:05 p.m. The game will be the third in a row between the 8-1-1-0 P-Bruins and the 7-5-1-0 Pirates.
