Huntsville wins over Carolina

Huntsville, AL --- Jeremy Jeffress won his second straight Double-A start as the Huntsville Stars defeated the first-place Carolina Mudcats 4-1 at Joe Davis Stadium before 2,704 fans on Saturday night.

Jeffress (W, 2-0), making just his third start for Huntsville, worked 5 2/3 innings, permitting six hits and a run, fanning seven in the victory.

Despite the loss, Carolina's (37-24) magic number to clinching the second half title in the Northern Division dwindled to four thanks to Tennessee's home loss to Chattanooga. Nine games remain in the regular season which concludes on Labor Day.

The Mudcats managed just six hits for the second game in a row, with three coming off of the bat of 1B Andy Jenkins. Brad Davis collected two while Chris DeLaCruz had the other.

Aaron Thompson (L, 1-5) suffered the loss by yielding four runs over five innings. Huntsville (28-33) scored a run in the first, then added a two-run single by Martin Maldonado in the second. Chris Errecart doubled hom Cole Gillespie from first base in the third inning to complete this scoring.

Ryan Tucker pitched two scoreless innings, followed by Jacob Marceaux tossing a perfect eighth.

Willie Glen (9-4, 2.04) starts the series' second game Sunday at 6:05 PM ET against Mike Jones (1-5, 6.29).
