Huntsville Stars News Release

Saturday, 1:15 am

(Huntsville) - Gates opened at midnight and by 12:01 am we were chunking first pitches downrange at Joe Davis Stadium. After just over an hour Stars fans had thrown over 1200 pitches. The current record is 8,304 first pitches held by the Brevard County Manatees.

I have to admit, I first did this promotion with a team called the Cape Fear Crocs in 1997 in Fayetteville, NC. We shattered the old record of 51 first pitches with 72 and we've have seen the record grow every year since. But in 12 years I have never had the turn out like we did this morning.

The lights are on, the baseballs are being thrown at a record pace and even some of the Stars players stopped by to watch the proceedings. Pitcher David Welch's son, Maddux (six months), is the youngest person to throw out a pitch. The Stars completed a road trip last night (Friday night) at Birmingham and the team just returned to the stadium.

If you want to be a part of a record, drag your family down to Joe Davis Stadium anytime Saturday. Get in line, throw your pitch and be counted. You do not need a ticket until 3:00 pm. After that time all fans will receive a souvenir baseball to keep.
