Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- An error by Juan Francisco in the seventh inning scored a pair of runs as Huntsville downed Carolina 2-1 at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
After Travis Wood (L, 0-2) carried a no-hitter into the seventh, a single and walk put two Stars aboard with two outs and Carolina (5-7) clinging to a 1-0 lead. Derrik Lutz hit the first batter he faced to fill the bases before facing pinch-hitter Drew Anderson. Anderson hit a routine slow roller to third base, but the squared-up Francisco saw the ball roll through his legs as Jonathon Lucroy and Lorenzo Cain came home to put Huntsville (6-6) ahead 2-1.
Carolina had taken a 1-0 lead in the second against Chris Cody (W, 1-0) thanks to the Mudcats' eighth unearned run of the two games played thus far in the series. Todd Frazier reached on a throwing error from third baseman Vinny Rottino, then was balked to second. Michael Griffin reached on an infield single, pushing Frazier to third. Eric Eymann then hit into a double play, but Frazier scored to give Wood the lead.
Wood worked 6 2/3 innings, permitting just the one hit and fanning three with three walks. Cody pitched six-plus innings, yielding just the one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Carolina had four hits in the game, with Frazier collecting two of them, including his league-leading sixth double.
Juan Sandoval (S, 2) worked a perfect ninth to earn his second save.
Carolina plays the middle game of the series on Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM with Jordan Smith (1-0, 3.00) facing Bobby Bramhall (0-1, 5.14).
