Birmingham Barons News Release
The Barons scored six two-out runs in a seven-run fifth inning Monday to defeat Jacksonville 10-4 at Regions Park.
Graham Taylor (2-1, 3.24) took the loss for Jacksonville, but his bullpen did him no favors. Chris Leroux relieved Taylor with two outs in the fifth inning, and allowed the first six batters to reach base, including Tyler Flowers' 3-run double that broke the game open.. Flowers finished the game 3-for-5.
Jayson Nix started at shortstop for the Barons and promptly went 2-for-4 with three RBI of his own. Nix joined the team earlier in the day on a Major League rehab assignment.
David Cook (2-for-4) put the Barons on the board with a run-scoring triple in the second inning. The right fielder scored two batters later on a Lee Cruz single.
John Ely (2-0, 3.60) pitched just long enough to earn his second victory on the young season. Cruising along with a 3-1 lead and two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Ely allowed back-to-back singles before Scott Cousins hit a monster, 3-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center field to give the Suns a short-lived 4-3 lead. The first-year Baron allowed four runs in his five innings of work.
The same two teams play Tuesday night at Regions Park. Brian Omogrosso (1-0, 3.27) looks for his second victory of the season, while Sean West (1-0, 3.00) will try to even the series for Jacksonville.
