Hughes, Rivers Go Deep As Barnstormers Split
June 9, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Barnstormers appear to have gotten a breath of life from 12 time zones away.
Australian Luke Hughes went 3-for-4 in the second game of Wednesday night's doubleheader as the Barnstormers put together their best offensive showing on the road in a month in a 9-5 victory over the York Revolution.
York won the opener, 3-2.
Hughes drove in the first run of the nightcap and helped to build the five-run fifth inning that got the Barnstormers over a 5-3 deficit.
Lance Zawadzki and Hughes each singled with one out off Shawn Hill (1-5) in the fifth. Brian Cavazos-Galvez hit into a force play for the second out, but the relay throw from second baseman Starlin Rodriguez pulled Johan Limonta off the bag, allowing the inning to continue. Hill walked Brandon Jones to load the bases, and the Revs went to lefty Leyson Septimo out of the pen, forcing Keith Castillo to bat right-handed. Castillo rapped a grounder down the first baseline, which Limonta smothered, but he had nowhere to throw as Septimo was late getting to the bag. By the time the Revs fed first, Castillo was diving through the bag, and two runs scored.
Kevin Rivers followed with a three-run homer for an 8-5 lead, and Hughes tacked on a solo shot in the sixth for the 9-5 margin.
Hughes, Jones and Castillo had each singled home a run in the first, but York surged back with four in the third on a solo blast by Rodriguez and RBI hits by Andres Perez, Brandon Boggs and Limonta. Shannon Wilkerson doubled home an unearned run to chase starter Matt Packer in the fourth.
Pete Andrelczyk (2-1) notched the win for Lancaster while Kyle Simon and Zach Jackson worked a scoreless inning apiece to nail down the game. The trio combined to strike out eight.
Wilson Valdez both saved and won the opener for York.
The 37-year old shortstop made a terrific catch in medium deep left field with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning after Ferdinand overran the ball, then stroked a game winning single in the bottom of the inning.
York grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on Wilkerson's first Atlantic League home run. Logan Williamson held that advantage, retiring the first 13 batters he faced and carrying a no-hitter for 5 2/3. However, Zawadzki and Hughes greeted him with singles to start the seventh, and the Revs switched to right-hander Josh Judy.
Judy (2-0) retired Cavazos-Galvez on a medium fly to center and appeared to end the game when Brandon Jones hit a two-hopper to second. Rodriguez, attempting to start a double play, pulled Valdez off the second base bag, and the Revs failed to record an out. Castillo and Rivers each drew a bases loaded walk, and it appeared that Lancaster would jump ahead before Valdez' mad dash into left to save Anderson Feliz' fly ball.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Rodriguez banged a single into right center off Marcus Walden (0-3). He stole second with Valdez at the plate and scored when Valdez singled into right. Cavazos-Galvez made an accurate throw home, but Castillo was unable to field the hop and tag out Rodriguez.
The series will conclude on Wednesday evening. Lancaster will send Joe Gardner (0-1) to the mound against fellow right-hander Anthony Lerew (3-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN, rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
