Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas. - The Sugar Land Skeeters overcame five unearned runs in the sixth inning with RBI from Travis Scott and Kevin Russo in the seventh to claim the tussle with the Bridgeport Bluefish, 7-6. The Skeeters improve to 22-23 while the Bluefish fall to 18-25.

Scott went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double and three RBI to pace the Skeeters. With 1.1 innings of perfect relief, Derrick Loop earned his first victory of the season and has retired the last 24 batters faced in his last eight appearances.

Sugar Land struck first in the bottom of the first with three singles in the opening frame. Dustin Martin reached on a base knock before Delwyn Young poked a lazy-line drive through the right side to put runners on first and second. Scott took Bridgeport starter, Reinaldo Lopez's 2-1 offering the other way, spraying the ball down leftfield line, bringing in Martin and staking the Skeeters to an early lead.

The Skeeters tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second for an early 4-0 advantage. Denny Almonte drew a one-out walk and stole second, his 11th-stolen base of the season. Amadeo Zazueta singled through the right-side of the infield, putting runners on the corners. Willy Taveras singled into left, bringing in Almonte, and Martin drew a walk to load the bases. Young hit a slow-roller between first and second. Bluefish first baseman, Andres Rodriguez, made the easy throw to second, but Bridgeport was unable to complete the double play with an errant throw to first, allowing Taveras to come in to score and inflate the cushion to 4-0.

Shane Loux saw his scoreless innings streak come to an end in the top of the fourth. A leadoff single was eventually cut down at the plate following an error for the second out, but Andres Rodriguez, who reached on the fielder's choice, eventually came around to score. James Simmons drew a walk and Matt Wessinger followed with a ground-rule double into the left-center alley, ending Loux's shutout streak at 16 innings.

The Skeeters tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth. Jeremy Barfield blasted a single off the wall in left before Scott doubled deep to centerfield, bringing Barfield around to score and giving Sugar Land a 5-1 lead.

Bridgeport got a pair of runs in the sixth following a two-out error by Zazueta at shortstop. Cory VanAllen entered to pitch for Sugar Land and surrendered back-to-back walks to Jobduan Morales and Andres Rodriguez. After a strikeout and a flyout to shallow center, VanAllen appeared to escape the jam by inducing Jake Luce to hit a ground ball to short. Zazueta was unable to field the ball cleanly as Morales came around to score. Sean Burroughs singled up the middle, bringing in Rodriguez and chasing VanAllen from the game. With Robbie Weinhardt on the mound, Welington Dotel singled through the right side and John Alonso doubled off the wall in left to stake the Bluefish to a 6-5 lead.

Sugar Land continued to battle at the plate and reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Taveras singled into the right-center alley and Delwyn Young legged out an infield single to third to put two on for the Skeeters. Scott picked up his third RBI of the night on a single into right, allowing Taveras to score his second run on the evening and tie the game at six. With runners on the corners, Kevin Russo pulled a line drive just over the head of the Bluefish's third baseman, allowing Young to come in and reclaim the lead for the Skeeters, 7-6.

Loop and John Lujan retired the final eight batters of the game to earn the win and save, respectively.
