Hughes Goes Seven, Leads Tourists to Third Straight Win
April 6, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
Charleston, WV--Ben Hughes (1-0, 1.29) opened eyes during his first start in an Asheville Tourists uniform. The 6'5 Right-Hander out of St. Louis Park, MN covered seven innings Saturday night, allowing just one run on six hits. Hughes commanded the strike zone all night and induced ground ball out after ground ball out in the 4-1 victory.
Asheville won their third straight contest to open up the 2013 campaign and did so behind another balanced attack. The bullpen of Rayan Gonzalez and Raul Fernandez pitched the final two innings without surrendering a run. Asheville's bullpen through the first three games of the season has a 0.79 ERA in over 11 innings of work. Fernandez also notched his second save of the season.
Offensively, Asheville once again took advantage of several West Virginia miscues. After falling behind for the first time this season, 1-0, Rosell Herrera went from first to third on a missed catch pick-off attempt by Power first baseman Stetson Allie. Herrera would score on Francisco Sosa's single to left.
Julian Yan then broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh, scoring on a Kyle Haynes wild pitch. Matt Wessinger crossed the plate soon after on Juan Ciriaco's single to second base.
The Tourists added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Matt Argyropoulos doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Michael Ramirez reached on a D.J. Crumlich throwing error. The Power have committed seven errors in the past two games.
Asheville will go for a four-game series sweep Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 pm.
