Drive and RiverDogs Split Doubleheader

It was a beautiful day to play two in Greenville, and everything that went wrong for the Greenville Drive (2-1) in game one turned around in game two, as they overcame a 6-2 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs (1-2) in the afternoon to pick up a 8-4 victory in the nightcap at Fluor Field.

Charleston struck first in the top of the first in game two against Drive starter Austin Maddox. Taylor Dugas singled to left to lead things off and scored when Cito Culver followed with a triple to right-center. Two batters later, Greg Bird singled to right to bring Culver in, and Saxon Butler doubled off the left field wall to score Bird later in the inning.

The Drive responded by rudely greeting RiverDogs starter Derek Varnadore (0-1) with four runs of their own. Mike Miller led off with a single, which was followed by a walk by Bryan Johns. After a flyout, an infield popup off the bat of Boss Moanaroa dropped in between all four infielders and the pitcher, which loaded the bases. Aneury Tavarez then laced a double to the wall in left field, scoring a pair. David Chester then singled to center field which brought in Moanaroa and Tavarez, giving the Drive a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Drive added a single run in the second inning, when Johns singled and later came in to score on a fielder's choice by Tavarez.

Charleston scored their final run of the night in the top of the third when Yeicok Calderon blasted a solo homer to center field against Maddox to make the score 4-3.

Greenville added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. Tavarez smacked a two-out double to left which brought home Cody Koback, who singled with one out and stole second. Chester followed with a single to right, scoring Tavarez from second base.

The Drive added another insurance run in the fifth when Miller doubled to left with two outs and was plated on an RBI single from Johns.

JB Wendelken (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Maddox. He threw the final three innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out a pair of Charleston hitters.

Tavarez picked up two hits and four RBIs in game two for Greenville. Chester added two hits and three RBIs of his own, while Miller, Johns and Koback each had a pair of hits. Bird had three hits for the RiverDogs, while Dugas, Culver, Calderon and Fu-Lin Kuo picked up two hits apiece.

Both games of the doubleheader were scheduled for seven innings, but game one took nine innings to decide. The RiverDogs broke the game open in the top of the ninth with four runs, most of which were charged to Drive reliever Braden Kapteyn (0-1). The go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Dante Bichette Jr. and an RBI double by Peter O'Brien gave the RiverDogs some extra cushion.

Alex Smith (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the RiverDogs by throwing three and two-thirds scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He relieved Rafael De Paula, who stymied Drive hitters to the tune of 11 strikeouts in four and a third innings of work.

Charleston brought home two runs in the top of the second against Drive starter Pat Light. Butler drove an RBI double to the left-field wall, and Dugas singled to center to bring home another run.

The Drive knotted the game at two in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Kendrick Perkins and Miller began the frame, and Jose Vinicio dropped a beautiful base-hit bunt down the first base line with one out to plate Perkins. Mookie Betts then followed with an RBI groundout to second to tie the score.

Jayson Hernandez was the only Drive hitter with two hits in the first game. O'Brien and Butler each collected a pair of hits for the RiverDogs, while Bichette drove in two.

These two teams will conclude their four game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM with the Fluor Field gates opening at 3:00. The Drive will send LHP Brian Johnson to the mound, while Charleston will counter with RHP Gabe Encinas.
