Hughes: Went 3-5 for Tri-City over 14 starts (4.40 ERA w/ 61 K & 25 BB over 71.2 IP)
Castro: Made 21 appearances between two levels in 2012 (4-6 w/ a 4.76 ERA over 18 games for WVP)
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost their second straight to the Asheville Tourists, falling 15-6 Friday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The Tourists scored in every inning but the first and ninth, including a three home run eighth that generated four runs. Reliever Josh Smith took the loss in his season debut. Max Moroff had three hits and Wyatt Mathisen drove in a pair to pace the offense that helped keep the game even through five before Asheville took command for good in the sixth.
ROSTER RUNDOWN: The initial 2013 Power roster features five playersranked by Baseball America in the top 30 Pittsburgh Pirates prospects, eight with South Atlantic League experience, and 13 selected within the last two drafts. Outfielder Josh Bell (6th according to BA) returns after missing most of the 2012 season with a knee injury. Other top prospects include pitcher Clay Holmes (10), catcher Wyatt Mathisen (15), pitcher Tyler Glasnow (19), and infielder Dilson Herrera (20), the reigning Topps GCL Player-of-the-Year.
CHASING 300: West Virginia is eight wins away from reaching 300 home victories. The franchise holds a current mark of 292-262 at Appalachian Power Park including both regular season and playoff contests.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490 will carry the Cincinnati Red game on Monday starting at 4:10 and will join West Virginia's series opener with the Charleston RiverDogs in progress after the final out in St. Louis. HISTORY IS IN THE PAST: West Virginia teams have gotten off to rough starts in six of their first eight seasons, regardless of affiliation with Milwaukee (2005 - 08) or Pittsburgh (2009 - present). Power clubs have gone 8-21 combined during their first series of each season from 2005 though 2012.
NEW SKIPPER FOR THE NEW SEASON: Pittsburgh has assigned Michael Ryan to manage the Power during the 2013 campaign. The former outfielder was selected in the fifth round of the 1996 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins out of Indiana High School in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Ryan played in 1,345 games in the Minors over 15 seasons and 149 in the Majors while playing within the Twins, Braves, Pirates, Marlins, and Angels organizations, as well as 60 in independent ball. He served as a player/coach for the Altoona Curve during the 2012 season.
TOURISTS TRAVEL WELL: Asheville leads the all-time series with West Virginia 39-27 and have gone 22-13 at Appalachian Power Park since 2005. These two clubs meet for three more games this series and will square off next week at McCormick Field when the Tourists hold their home opener. The Power are 14-17 all-time in Asheville.
ALUMNI WATCH: Wily Peralta (2008) is a member of the Milwaukee Brewers rotation, serving as their number three starter. Peralta is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA this season. Jameson Taillon (2011) will makes his 2013 debut this evening.
PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 10: The Power will host a College & Career Fair on April 10 at 10:30 am during the series finale with the Charleston RiverDogs.
POWER POINTS: Copies of the 2013 Media Guide are available upon request... After two games, Walker Gourley is fifth in the Pirates organization with a .429 batting average... Joely Rodriguez struck out eight is his Opening Day start, leads all Pirates minor league pitchers, and ranks second in the SAL... David Jagoditch and Kyle Haynes are the only two relievers who have not seen action over the first two games for West Virginia.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh traveled to Los Angeles and lost 3-0 to Zack Greinke and the Dodgers. The Buccos were held to two hits in a game for the second time during their opening week... Indianapolis lost 7-4 to Columbus... Altoona beat Erie 4-1. Casey Sadler allowed one run on six hits in the victory... Bradenton lost to Fort Myers 4-1. Gregory Polanco had three hits in the loss for the Marauders.
