Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS: The Hudson Valley Renegades dug deep and pulled out yet another comeback victory, downing the Vermont Lake Monsters 5-4 in ten innings Thursday night in front of 3,943 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The 'Gades (35-16) rallied twice from one-run deficits and plated the game-winner with bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth frame against the Lake Monsters (24-27). It was the sixth straight win for Hudson Valley, and their sixth straight at home, where they are a league-best 19-8 in 2012.
Vermont opened the scoring in the top of the sixth. Brett Vertigan drew a leadoff walk from All-Star Hudson Valley reliever Jose Molina, and moved up to second on a balk. With one out, John Wooten hit a ground out to All-Star shortstop Leonardo Reginatto, advancing Vertigan to third base. Bruce Maxwell hit a liner that just ticked off the glove of a leaping Reginatto at short, finding its way into center field and scoring Vertigan to give Vermont the 1-0 lead.
The Renegades struck back in the bottom of the sixth against Vermont starter Tyler Vail. With two outs, Vail struck third baseman Richie Shaffer with a pitch, and gave up a single to second baseman Ryan Dunn to put runners on first and second. First baseman Michael Williams lined a single to right field to score Shaffer, and the Renegades wound up with runners on second and third when Wooten bobbled the ball trying to pick it up. Drew Gagnier replaced Vail in an attempt to stop the scoring, but Reginatto laced a single to right field to score both runners and put the home team up 3-1 after six innings.
The Lake Monsters retook the lead in the top of the seventh. Diomedes Lopez led off with a single against 'Gades reliever Kris Carlson, and moved up to second with one out on a wild pitch. Addison Russell then rocked a double to left field to score Lopez. With two outs, All-Star infielder Christopher Bostick grounded a single through the left side to score Russell and tie the game, advancing to second on Joel Caminero's throw to the plate. Wooten hit a bouncer to Reginatto that should have been the third out, but the shortstop threw errantly to first, allowing Wooten to reach and scoring Bostick to give Vermont the 4-3 lead. Rob Finneran came on with two on and two out, managing a strikeout to finish the frame.
Hudson Valley evened the score again in the bottom of the eighth against Vermont reliever Austin House. Designated hitter Justin O'Conner laced a one-out double up the right field line. With two outs, Lopez allowed a passed ball to move O'Conner to third, and House tossed a wild pitch that gave O'Conner the chance to race home and tie the ballgame 4-4.
In the top of the ninth, Finneran ran into trouble, allowing a one-out walk to Wooten. Maxwell then hit a grounder to first that Michael Williams allowed through his legs for a two-base error, putting runners on second and third with just one out. But catcher Jake DePew came up with a tremendous pickoff throw, catching Wooten napping at third for the second out. Finneran induced a weak ground-out from Daniel Robertson to end the inning, and the Renegades escaped unscathed.
Hudson Valley finally put the game away in the bottom of the tenth. Right fielder Charles Epperson crushed a lead-off triple off reliever Deyvi Jimenez (0-4), and DePew drew a walk behind him to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jimenez intentionally walked center fielder Deshun Dixon to load the bases, bringing up O'Conner. The designated hitter slashed a 1-2 breaking ball hard to second base, and Bostick couldn't haul it in. The RBI single brought home Epperson for the winning run and touched off the celebration for the Renegades.
All-Star starting pitcher Jeff Ames went 4.2 scoreless innings for Hudson Valley, allowing three hits and a walk against four strikeouts. Molina gave up a run on a hit and two walks over 1.1 innings, fanning two. Carlson coughed up three runs (two earned) on four hits, recording only two outs. Finneran threw 2.1 scoreless frames, with two strikeouts against a hit and two walks. Ryan Garton (3-0) pitched a scoreless tenth inning for the win, giving up a hit and whiffing two.
Vail gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings; he struck out three. Gagnier allowed one hit against two strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings, but let two inherited runners score. House gave up an unearned run on one hit over two innings, whiffing two. Jimenez took the loss for Vermont; he failed to record a single out, and allowed the winning run on two hits and two walks.
