Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners used the longball Thursday night, combined with another solid pitching effort to win their fifth consecutive series, topping the Brooklyn Cyclones Thursday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,157 at LeLacheur Park, 3-1.
Scoreless through five, Brooklyn (31-20) broke through for a run in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of a two out walk to Kevin Plawecki. Stefan Sabol followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Plawecki to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (23-28) answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Dreily Guerrero led off with an infield single, but was caught trying to steal second base with David Chester at-bat. The out was costly, as Chester promptly homered to left field, knotting the score at one. Mookie Betts followed with a single up the middle and Matt Marquis took the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to give the Spinners a 3-1 lead.
The Spinners bullpen took it from there as Jacob Dahlstrand and Braden Kapteyn combined for three additional scoreless innings to lock down the win.
Betts and Marquis each led the Spinners with three hit nights, while Guerrero added a two-hit night, stealing a base.
Brian Johnson continued his string of zeroes, throwing two hitless innings, striking out two. Dahlstrand (4-2, 3.35) picked up his fourth consecutive win after going winless throughout his first two professional seasons, while Kapteyn picked up his fourth save with two hitless innings, striking out four.
The win was the Spinners seventh in their last eight and 11th in their last 13.
The team heads off on a three-game road trip to Fishkill, NY for a quick set against the Hudson Valley Renegades leading into the All-Star Break. Pat Light (0-1, 2.77) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch. They return to LeLacheur Park Wednesday, August 15 for a six-game series beginning with Speed Dating with Tyler Seguin Night.
