Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (29-20) fell 10-6 to the Jamestown Jammers (21-28) on Wednesday night, thereby splitting a two-game series and finishing the season series 6-4. The win was the first for Jamestown this summer in Auburn in five games.
It was a five-run seventh inning that did in the Doubledays, one night after Auburn used a three-run seventh to capture a win in the first game of the series. The five-run top of the seventh saw Jamestown bat around, sending all nine hitters to the plate. The rally started with two outs and included three singles, a double, and two walks. Both 2B Anthony Gomez and DH Yefri Perez were responsible for driving in two runs in the frame, and both players finished with multi-hit games.
Jamestown initially went ahead 3-0, scoring two in the second and one in the fourth. In the second SS Yeison Hernandez drove in both runs with a double to center field. In the fourth a leadoff triple by 3B Matt Juengel turned into a run, as he scored on a sacrifice fly from Gomez.
The Doubledays answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. With two on and two outs, LF Estarlin Martinez sent a single to right. Martinez rounded first and headed for second to try and stretch his single into a double. The throw from RF Michael Main would have beat Martinez to second, but it sailed way over the head of Gomez, allowing both runners on base and Martinez to all score on the play.
The Jammers broke the 3-3 tie in the sixth when LF Jesus Solorzano sent a double to left to begin the inning. He came around to score on a single by Gomez. Jamestown's final run came in the ninth on a solo homerun by catcher Sharif Othman. Auburn also scored in the ninth when a fielding error by Juengel allowed DH Mike McQuillan to score from second and Martinez to get aboard. Martinez then scored the Doubledays final run on an RBI double from RF Wander Ramos.
LHP Nick Lee (1-1) started for Auburn and suffered the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out four. RHP Jose Rodriguez (2-1) earned the win for Jamestown, pitching 2.1 innings in relief and allowing one unearned run on three hits, while walking one and striking out three.
The Doubledays begin a two-game series with the State College Spikes on Thursday, August 9. Auburn will send RHP Ivan Pineyro (1-1) to the mound for his fourth start of the year. He will take on LHP Joely Rodriguez (2-1) for State College. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. It will be another $1.00 Thursday, with Labatt or Budweiser drafts, Coca-Cola soft drinks, and Hoffman hot dogs all available for $1.00 each. Tickets available by calling the Doubledays box office at 315-255-2489 or by going online to www.auburndoubledays.com.
