
Tigers Take Series with 6-5 Win

NORWICH-DH Zach Kirksey (1-4) hit a two-run single in the third inning as the Connecticut Tigers (23-27) won 6-5 over the Staten Island Yankees (16-34) before 1,161 fans at Dodd Stadium on Thursday.
The Tigers withstood a three-run comeback attempt by the Yankees in the ninth inning. RHP Edgar De La Rosa (4-2) pitched five and one-thirds innings to pick up the win.
The Yankees scored a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. SS Claudio Custodio (0-4) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. He moved to third base when 1B Matt Snyder (1-4) lined out to center field.
Custodio scored on a wild pitch from De La Rosa for a 1-0 Staten Island lead.
The Tigers scored two runs in the third inning on a two-run single by Kirksey. LF Danry Vasquez (2-4) singled and moved to third base on a double by RF Patrick Smith (1-3) before Kirksey hit a single to center field.
Connecticut scored three runs without a hit in the seventh inning and an insurance run in the eighth inning for a 6-2 lead.
The Yankees scored a run in the eighth inning and three in the ninth inning to put the pressure back on Connecticut before LHP Efrain Nieves worked one-third of an inning for his second save.
The Tigers go on the road to Aberdeen, MD to take on the Aberdeen IronBirds, the NYPL affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, on Friday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Endrys Briceno (4-2, 5.04) gets the start for Connecticut against LHP Jorge Rivera (0-1, 4.66) for Aberdeen. The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League.
