Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays announced today the names of five players who have been selected to represent the team at the New York - Penn League All-Star game, which will be played on Tuesday August 14 in Mahoning Valley. The five Doubledays heading to the game (and playing for the National League team) are 1B Shawn Pleffner, SS Wes Schill, OF Estarlin Martinez, OF Wander Ramos, and DH Craig Manuel.
Pleffner has an impressive .323 average in 30 games played for Auburn this summer. He is tied for the team lead in doubles with 13, and he has hits in three straight games since returning from a wrist injury that caused him to miss 16 games from July 19 - August 5. Pleffner was drafted by the Nationals in the 26th round in 2011 out of the University of Tampa, and this is his first season playing professional baseball.
Schill is currently hitting .269 in 39 games played for the Doubledays this summer. He is coming off an 11-game hitting streak, which was snapped just a couple days ago. Schill has played several different positions defensively for the Doubledays this summer, playing two games at second base, two at third base, 19 at shortstop, and 15 in center field. Schill signed with the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent on June 16, 2011, and he spent the 2011 summer playing for the Gulf Coast League Nationals, where he hit .255 in 43 games.
Martinez currently leads the team and is fourth in the league in hitting with a .325 average in 41 games. He also leads the team in hits (52), is tied for the team lead in triples (2), is second in homeruns (3) and RBI (25), and third in doubles (11). Defensively Martinez has spent time at first base, left field, and right field. Martinez was signed by the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent on January 30, 2009. This is his fourth professional season and first with Auburn.
Ramos leads the team in homeruns (4) and RBI (27) and walks (24). He is tied with Pleffner for the team lead in doubles (13), and is hitting .294 in 44 games played. Ramos was signed by the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent on November 10, 2008 and is currently playing in his fourth professional season. He spent 2011 in the Gulf Coast League where he hit .313 in 43 games with the Nationals.
Manuel is hitting .273 in 30 games this summer with Auburn. In 99 at-bats he has struck out just seven times while walking 10 times. Behind the plate Manuel has throw out eight of 18 base-stealers. Manuel makes the All-Star game as a DH, a position he has played nine times this summer. Manuel was the Nationals 10th round draft pick this June out of Rice University.
