Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades scored six runs in the top of the 10th inning to turn a nail-biter into a laugher as they defeated the Cyclones 9-3 on Sunday afternoon. Jose Mena went 3-for-5 with a home run and a pair of RBI to lead the offensive charge, but the Cyclones left 15 runners on base and went just 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position - including two pivotal outs with the game-winning run at third base in the bottom of the ninth.
Brooklyn opened the scoring in the top of the second when Mena laced a single into centerfield, scoring William Lugo from second base to give Brooklyn a 1-0 edge.
The lead was short-lived however, as Hudson Valley snatched the lead in the top of the third. Aaron Palensky worked a one-out walk against Brooklyn starter Dominic Hamel and Trey Sweeney followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Hamel then walked Jasson Dominguez to load the bases and put an end to his day on the mound. Justin Courtney was first on in relief for the 'Clones and Tyler Hardman roped the first pitch he saw into left field to score a pair and give the Renegades the 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brooklyn got back even thanks to Jose Mena's seventh home run of the season - a solo shot - to knot things up at 2-2.
But the back-and-forth scoring continued in the top of the fifth when Jasson Dominguez led off the frame with a double and stole third base before coming home on an RBI single from Anthony Seigler to give the Renegades a 3-2 edge.
So what happened next? Yep, you guessed it. Brooklyn got back to even in the bottom of the seventh with a Jose Peroza RBI single that made it 3-3.
That's how it stayed into the ninth. In the top of the frame Alex Ramirez threw out Trey Sweeney at the plate, trying to score the go ahead run, to keep things tied. In the bottom of the inning, Brooklyn has a scoring chance of their own. William Lugo had a one-out double and moved up to third in a sharply hit single into left field from Stanley Consuegra that put runners on the corners with one out. But Jose Mena struck out on three pitches and Joe Suozzi popped out on the infield to end the threat to send the game to extra frames.
In the 10th, the Renegades blew the game wide open with the big blow coming on a grand-slam off the bat Aaron Palensky to make the final score 9-3.
The loss dropped the Cyclones 1.5 games behind the Renegades with 3 weeks left in the season. Brooklyn heads to Jersey Shore to open a six-game series on Tuesday down the shore.
