Huber Earns First Major League Win

Fort Wayne, IN - Right-hander Jon Huber struck out one batter and issued an intentional walk on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers to earn his first major league victory.

Huber, who was a member of the San Diego Padres system and pitched with the Fort Wayne during the 2002 and 2003 seasons, became the 52nd former Wizard to reach the major leagues in the 13-year history of the team.

He split this season with Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tacoma of the Mariners organization. He was traded to the Mariners system by the Padres at the trade deadline in July of 2004. He was originally drafted by San Diego in the fifth round of the 2000 June Amateur Draft.

Huber was 3-4 with a 3.44 earned run average in 50 relief appearances for the Mariners minor league teams before being promoted on Monday. He recorded 23 saves in 65 1/3 innings and struck out 57.

Huber was 9-13 overall for Fort Wayne, going 8-12 in a full season in 2002 before making seven starts in 2003 and being promoted to the Lake Elsinore Storm. In his first year with the Wizards, he appeared in 28 games, including making 26 starts, had a 5.12 earned run average and struck out 86 in 146 innings. In 2003, he had a 1-1 mark with a 3.76 ERA and struck out 34 in 38 1/3 innings.
