
Lugnuts Sweep South Bend

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts will continue their playoff run after completing a sweep of the South Bend SilverHawks with a 4-3 win at Oldsmobile Park Thursday night. The win propells Lansing into the Eastern Division Championship Series beginning Saturday.
The Lugnuts jumped out to an early four run lead in the first inning. Luke Hetherington led the inning off by reaching on an error by shortstop Pedro Ciriaco. Jacob Butler then doubled to right field to move Hetherington to third with one out. After Joey Metropoulos walked to lead the bases, Brian Pettway lined a single to center to score Hetherington and make it 1-0. David Hicks then hit an RBI groundout to first to plate Butler and push the lead to 2-0. Jesus Gonzalez and Brian Bormaster then followed that up with consecutive RBI singles to give the Lugnuts a 4-0 lead.
South Bend began to claw back into the game when Bryan Byrne doubled to right field to score Greg Thomson to cut the lead to 4-1. Leyson Septimo tried to score on the play from first base, but Brian Pettway threw him out at home as the Lugnuts' catcher Brian Bormaster held onto the ball after being barrelled over by Septimo.
The SilverHawks made it 4-2 in the sixth when Will Crouch's double plated Byrne. Crouch was thrown out on at home on the next play when trying to score on a single to left, as Butler threw a strike home.
After getting another run in the eighth, South Bend put a runner on in the ninth with one out. However Paul Phillips was able to convert his second save in as many nights to give the Lugnuts the win.
Adrian Martin got the win for the Lugnuts, throwing six innings and scattering 11 hits. He allowed just two runs in the game.
Kyle Wright suffered the loss for the Hawks, allowing four unearned runs in the first inning.
Lansing will move on to play the winner of the West Michigan / Fort Wayne series on Saturday night. If West Michigan wins, the Lugnuts will host the Whitecaps on Saturday night. If Fort Wayne wins, Lansing will travel to Memorial Stadium for game one.
