Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON (Friday, March 7, 2014) - The Houston Dynamo and New England Revolution open the MLS regular season on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at BBVA Compass Stadium. Limited tickets are available at www.HoustonDynamo.com, by calling 713-276-GOAL, or by visiting the BBVA Compass Stadium box office (2200 Texas St., Houston) from 12:00 p.m. through kickoff tomorrow.
Tomorrow's game, presented by Conn's, will feature a postgame fireworks show. In addition, the first 5,000 fans through the gates will receive a free cinch bag, presented by Conn's.
The game will be broadcast live on CSN Houston (7:00 p.m. pregame show) and can be heard on Yahoo Sports Radio 1560 AM and 850 AM (Spanish).
Last season, the Dynamo reached the Eastern Conference Championship for the third straight year but fell to Sporting Kansas City, 2-1 on aggregate, to prevent Houston from its third straight trip to MLS Cup. It was the sixth conference championship appearance in eight seasons for the Dynamo.
The Revolution returned to the playoffs in 2013 and pushed eventual champion Sporting Kansas City to the brink before succumbing in extra time, 4-3 on aggregate.
The home team did not win any of the three meetings between the Dynamo and Revolution in 2013. First, the Revolution seized a 2-0 win at BBVA Compass Stadium on May 18. The Dynamo reversed their fortunes with a 2-1 triumph at Gillette Stadium on July 13 behind two long-range goals from Adam Moffat. In their final meeting, the Dynamo gained a point in Foxboro with a 1-1 draw on Sept. 28 after Will Bruin's 76th minute equalizer.
The Dynamo return the majority of their roster from the 2013 season, including nine of 11 starters from the 2013 Eastern Conference Championship second leg at Sporting Kansas City. Among the returnees is 2013 club MVP and goalkeeper Tally Hall, who had 21 shutouts over the last two seasons. In addition, 2013 Dynamo Golden Boot winner Giles Barnes (9 goals), Players' Player of the Year Ricardo Clark (career-high four goals and four assists), Defender of the Year Kofi Sarkodie and Young Player of the Year Warren Creavalle return to the club. Finally, Honduras international midfielder Boniek Garcia, U.S. international midfielder and club captain Brad Davis, and 2012 Golden Boot winner Will Bruin are back in 2014.
The Revolution features Jose Goncalves, the 28-year-old Portuguese center back who earned MLS Defender of the Year honors in 2013 after playing every minute of the regular season. New England's attack is led by 19-year-old homegrown player Diego Fagundez, who had 13 goals and seven assists in 2013. The Revs also feature Kelyn Rowe, 22, who scored seven goals and added a team-high eight assists last season.
The Revolution holds a 7-4-6 record in the all-time regular season series with the Dynamo and is 5-2-1 all-time in Houston, the only MLS team with a winning record or positive goal difference (9 goals for, 5 goals against) in Houston.
