Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - The Houston Astros purchased the contract of catcher/first baseman J.R. House late Sunday. House, who played 97 games with the Hooks this year before being called up to Triple-A Round Rock on July 28th, will be in uniform for Monday's opener in Cincinnati.

While with the Hooks House hit .325 with 10 home runs, 23 doubles and 67 RBIs. In addition, the 26-year-old was a member of the 2006 Texas League South All-Star Team. House began the 2006 season with an 18-game hitting streak and never went more than two games without a hit while in Corpus Christi.

House, who spent time with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003 and 2004, batted .429 with three home runs, 12 doubles, 19 runs and 26 RBI in 23 games for Round Rock. House was also named the PCL Batter of the Week for July 31 - Aug. 6 in which he hit .556 (15-for-27) with a home run, five doubles, seven runs and 11 RBI.

House, who caught in 64 of his 97 games for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks before joining Round Rock, had previously served 17 games as a first baseman, two as a pinch hitter, two as a designated hitter and one as a second baseman for the Express.

J.R. House struggled through a series of injuries from 1999-2004 with the Pirates organization and eventually left baseball to become the third-string quarterback at West Virginia University for the 2005 season.

He reconnected with baseball in 2006, joining the Houston Astros' major league squad at spring training. House went 4-for-14 (.286) with a double and an RBI in nine games for the Astros.

With the purchase of House's contract by the Astros, catcher Eric Munson was designated for assignment Sunday. Houston has 10 days to trade, release or reassign Munson to the Minor Leagues.
