PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brian Stavisky, Midland RockHounds
13-34, .382 BA, .706 SLG, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 9 R
Brian Stavisky was arguably the most productive hitter in the Texas League this week, smashing three home runs and driving in 12 runs. His hot streak extends further than just this week, too. He has a 14-game hitting streak during which he has driven in 17 runs. He also has an RBI in nine of his last 10 games and a run scored in each of his last six. During the hitting streak he has also has draw 11 walks and struck out just seven times. In his last game of the week he went 4-for-6 with three RBI.
Stavisky was signed in the sixth round of the 2006 draft out of Notre Dame and has hit well ever since. The outfielder batted .294 in Vancouver the year he was drafted. In his first full season, Kane County of the Midwest League in 2003, he batted just .266, but had an OBP of .396 due to 62 walks. 2004 he broke out for Modesto, slugging 19 home runs, hitting .343 and driving in 83 runs. He continued at his torrid pace in Midland last year, recording a career high of 88 RBI. Although struggling in Triple-A Sacramento to start the season, Stavisky seems to have gotten back in the groove in the Texas League.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Marc Kaiser, Tulsa Drillers
2-0, 1.79 ERA, 15 2/3 IP, 12 H, 3 BB, 3 K
On August 20th, his second start of the week, Marc Kaiser tossed a complete game shutout against San Antonio. While that alone may have been enough to get him Pitcher of the Week honors, he recorded another win on August 15, limiting a potent Corpus Christi offense to just three runs in 6 2/3 innings. In his shutout, Kaiser allowed just five hits and a pair of walks with no extra-base hits. The only hint of trouble he had was in the final inning when two Missions reached base with two outs. He induced a groundout to end the game.
Kaiser was drafted in the 10th round of the 2003 draft by the Rockies. He tossed 37 innings in the Northwest league that year and gave up just two earned runs in seven starts. The Reno, Nevada native posted a 10-10 record with a 4.33 ERA in the Sally League in 2004. Last year for Modesto of the California League he went 7-6 with a 4.45 ERA. Kaiser has found himself on perhaps the best starting rotation in the Texas League, and has performed very well in his starting role. It is his second weekly award of the season, having won for the first time on June 12 - June 18, when he tossed his first complete game against Springfield.
