Hounds Take a Bite out of the Hooks

April 23, 2008 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Former major leaguer and Carroll Tiger Brooks Kieschnick, on hand for the opening of the new all-you-can-eat dining option known as "Brooks' Buffet" on Wednesday nights at Whataburger Field, chomped down four hot dogs during a brief eating contest designed to highlight the event. His appetite paled in comparison to the spread of runs consumed by the visitors from West Texas.

Jesus Guzman had four hits and three RBI's, and starting pitcher James Simmons tossed six innings of shutout ball as the RockHounds rolled to an 11-0 victory before a crowd of 7,178.

Guzman, now 9-for-15 in the series with eight RBI's, keyed Midland's two-run first with an RBI triple into the right field corner. He added run-scoring singles in the fifth and eighth innings, and tossed in another single in the sixth. He raised his league-leading batting average to .430 and pumped his league-best RBI total to 25.

Simmons (1-1) scattered four hits and did not issue a walk during his six efficient innings on the hill. He struck out five and did not allow a runner past second base. The victory was his first in the pro ranks.

Andy Shipman followed Simmons with three frames of one-hit ball, notching his first save of the year.

Hooks' starter Chance Douglass, after surrendering a pair of unearned runs in the first, held Midland at bay until the fifth, when RBI singles by Guzman and Myron Leslie gave the RockHounds a 4-0 lead. Douglass (1-2) was charged with four runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks over five innings. He fanned three. With his five innings of work, Douglass moved past Josh Miller into first place on the Hooks' career list for innings pitched at 262.1.

Corpus Christi shortstop Tommy Manzella singled in the first to stretch his league-best hitting streak to 12 games. Designated hitter Richie Paz doubled in the sixth, pushing his total of career hits to 1,198.

The series against the RockHounds concludes with Thursday night's home stand finale. Sean Walker (0-2) takes the hill at 7:05 and will be opposed by Midland's Ryan Webb (1-0).
