Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals scored three times in the 14th inning, outlasting the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Tuesday night by a final score of 7-4 at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.
Luke Gorsett's first RBI in Double-A couldn't have come at a better time, as he delivered a two-out single to right field that plated AJ Van Slyke with what turned out to be the winning run. The 14-inning game equals the longest game in Springfield franchise history, established on April 23rd, 2005 in a 2-1 loss at Tulsa.
Springfield started their 14-inning rally with two outs, as Van Slyke picked up his second double of the night. After intentionally walking Jon Jay, Naturals' reliever Pat Green (0-1) gave up a base hit to right field off the bat of Gorsett. Van Slyke got waved around third by Manager "Pop" Warner scoring just ahead of right fielder Brian McFall's throw. Brandon Yarbrough singled right behind Gorsett, bringing in both Jay and Gorsett to make it 7-4.
Luke Gregerson worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning, securing his first save of the year.
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Springfield allowed Northwest Arkansas to take the lead at 4-3, as Kila Kaaihue capped a three-run inning with a two-run shot to right-center field against Zack Zuercher.
The Cards tied it in the ninth though, as Brandon Yarbrough opened the inning with his second of four hits, later scoring from third on an RBI groundout off the bat of Allen Craig to tie the game at 4-4.
Cards' reliever Nick Webber (1-1), who got out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the bottom of the 13th, picked up the win for the Redbirds, who are now just two games out of first place in the North Division.
Springfield starter Clayton Mortensen's outing went for not, as he allowed just one run on five hits in seven strong innings for a no-decision.
Adam Ottavino (0-2) and the Cardinals (6-12) look to make it two in a row, as they face Dan Cortes (0-1) and Northwest Arkansas again on Wednesday night. Game time from Arvest Ballpark in Springdale is 7:00pm.
The Cards return to Hammons Field on Tuesday, April 29th, as they face the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in the opening game of an eight-game home stand. The upcoming home stand includes Friday Night Fireworks, Great Southern Kids' T-Shirt Giveaway, "Pink in the Park" Night and much more.
