Hounds Open 2016 USL Season against Defending Champion

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are pleased to announce the club's regular season schedule for the 2016 United Soccer League season.

Rochester Rhinos visit Highmark Stadium for the Hounds' curtain raiser on Saturday 2 April at 7 p.m. The Rhinos charged away with last year's regular season title with a 17-1-10 record (61 points) before underlining their dominance with three playoff victories to lift the overall USL championship.

Pittsburgh's defense of the Keystone Derby Cup sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lottery begins the following weekend when the Harrisburg City Islanders travel west on April 9. The Hounds lifted the inaugural trophy with three wins from four clashes last year. Harrisburg returns to Highmark Stadium for the Hounds' traditional July 4 game before Mark Steffens takes his team to Pennsylvania's state capital for the third and final encounter on Aug. 27.

The Hounds face a 30-game slate this year in the USL's 14-team Eastern Conference. Each team faces each other at least twice on a home-and-away basis. Pittsburgh's additional games are made up via second home clashes against Harrisburg and F.C. Cincinnati and return trips to Rochester and Bethlehem Steel F.C.

Pittsburgh meets the expansion Cincinnati side for the first time on May 14 at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium. The new instate rivalry with Bethlehem commences July 10 when the Hounds travel to Lehigh Valley.

Bethlehem gets the new USL season under way when it travels to F.C. Montreal on Friday 25 March.

Playoff Format

The USL's regular season title will be awarded to the team with the best record across both conferences. The top eight teams in each conference will advance to the USL playoffs. A single-elimination bracket will be used to crown two conference champions with the 2016 USL Championship game being hosted by the conference winner with the better regular season record.
