Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Midland RockHounds scored six times on three home runs Monday night en route to an 8-3 victory over Corpus Christi in the opener of their four-game set before 6,467 at Whataburger Field.

The Hooks stand 10-7 and fall a game behind Midland for second place in the Texas League South.

Midland starter Vincent Mazzaro (2-1) scattered eight hits over six innings, holding the Hooks to one run. Mazzaro, who tossed 85 pitches, wiggled out of jams in each of the first five frames with four of eight Corpus Christi runners retired on the basepaths.

Brian Bogusevic (1-1) followed up his winning effort last Tuesday with five strong innings before running into trouble in the sixth. Michael Massaro opened the frame for Midland with a single. In the next at-bat, former Carroll Tiger Cliff Pennington delivered a base hit to center, putting runners at first and second. After a sacrifice bunt, Jesus Guzman provided the pivotal blast, depositing the first pitch he saw into the bullpen in left-center for a three-run homer and a 4-1 RockHounds' lead.

Midland struck first thanks to a lead-off long ball by Jon Zeringue in the second. Bogusevic settled down, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters. The southpaw went on to surrender four runs off four hits in 5.1 innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Mitch Einertson accounted for the Hooks' run in the third, chopping a one-out single to center. Drew Sutton followed by placing a grounder through the right side. Tommy Manzella then belted a double into the gap in right-center, scoring Einertson from second base. Sutton was cut down at home on an outfield assist from Zeringue in right.

Justin Sellers made it 6-1 Midland in the eighth with a two-run homer to left field off Hooks reliever Jose Oyervidez.

Corpus Christi sent seven men to the plate in the eighth but left the bases loaded. Rob Cosby's team-leading 14th RBI of the season resulted in the Hooks' lone tally.

Midland's Andrew Bailey and Bud Norris are slated to start Tuesday. First pitch is 7:05.
