Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Northwest Arkansas Naturals scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning, edging the Springfield Cardinals by a final score of 1-0 at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas.
Monday's game was the first meeting in history between the two clubs, as this is the inaugural season for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, Kansas City's new Double-A affiliate.
Cards' starter Jaime Garcia threw the first complete game of the year for Springfield, but didn't get any run support over his eight innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning in a scoreless game, Adam Donachie of the Naturals tapped a one-hopper back to Garcia on the mound. Garcia had the ball go off of his glove, but upon recovering it, threw wildly to first baseman Mark Hamilton, allowing Donachie to reach second base.
After a wild pitch from Garcia allowed pinch-runner Ovandy Suero to reach third, Jose Duarte hit a tapper up the third-base line. Catcher Bryan Anderson was forced to field the ground ball with no play at Suero coming home, instead taking the out at first base.
That would be the game's only run, as the Cards failed to get the equalizer in the ninth against Devon Lowrey. Tyler Greene picked up a two-out bunt base hit and then stole second base to move the tying run into scoring position. After fouling off a number of 1-2 pitches, Cards' third baseman Brendan Ryan flew out to deep center field to end the game. The scoreless ninth gave Lowrey his first save of the year.
Garcia (2-2) struck out a career-high ten batters, but saw his personal two-game winning streak come to an end.
Northwest Arkansas starter Julio Pimentel tossed six scoreless innings, allowing four hits in the no-decision.
Naturals' reliever Paul Mildren (1-2) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win.
Shane Robinson and Tyler Greene both had two hits to lead the Springfield offense, which out-hit Northwest Arkansas 7-3.
Clayton Mortensen (1-1) will throw for Springfield (5-12) on Tuesday night, as he takes on Rowdy Hardy (0-2) of the Naturals. Game time from Arvest Ballpark in Springdale is 7:00pm.
The Cards return to Hammons Field on Tuesday, April 29th, as they face the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in the opening game of an eight-game home stand. The upcoming home stand includes Friday Night Fireworks, Great Southern Kids' T-Shirt Giveaway, "Pink in the Park" Night and much more.
