Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
Springdale, AR- The Northwest Arkansas Naturals and Springfield Cardinals treated fans to a classic pitchers duel Monday Night, as the Naturals squeaked by the S-Cards 1-0 in front of 4,629 fans at Arvest Ballpark.
Julio Pimentel started for the Naturals (5-12) and had one of his best outings of the season thus far. He tossed six scoreless frames, striking out four batters. On the opposing side was Jamie Garcia (2-2), ranked by Baseball America as the Cardinals' fifth-best prospect, who picked up the tough-luck loss. Garcia had Naturals' hitters fooled all night in a complete game effort, as he struck out a season-high 10 batters, and allowed just the unearned run that proved the difference-maker.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Adam Donachie reached on a throwing error by Garcia. Ovandy Suero came on to pinch run and, with Jose Duarte batting, advanced to third on Garcia's wild pitch. Duarte then hit into an RBI ground out to score Suero, giving the Naturals a 1-0 lead.
Tyler Greene and Shane Robinson each had two hits a piece for the Cardinals (5-12), who outhit the Naturals 7-3.
Naturals' reliever Paul Mildren (1-2) picked up the victory, tossing two shutout innings. Devon Lowery picked up his first save of the season, striking out two during a scoreless ninth that wasn't without drama, however. With two out, Greene reached on a bunt towards third and stole second. Cardinals utility infielder Brendan Ryan, on a Major League rehab assignment, worked the count full, fouling several pitches off before flying out to deep center to end the game.
The Naturals will play game two of their four game series against these same Springfield Cardinals Tuesday night at Arvest Ballpark. Tuesday is Arvest Customer Appreciation Night, where customers can present their bank statement or card to the ticket window to receive $2 off premium, reserved, and Subway Berm seating. After their series with the Cardinals the Naturals will host a four-game weekend series against their in-state rival Arkansas Travelers.
