Houlton delivers ace performance
May 29, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
The Round Rock Express pitching staff has been searching for an identity all year, especially an ace. Thursday night, D.J. Houlton took another step towards claiming that role. Houlton threw the first complete game shutout and the Express bats provided him with plenty of support to roll by the Midland RockHounds, 8-0, in front of 9,667 at The Dell Diamond.
Houlton was masterful in limiting the RockHounds to only four hits and he completed the game by retiring the 14 of the last 15 Midland hitters.
After going 7.2 shutout innings in his last start at San Antonio, Houlton is quickly taking over as the rotation's stopper.
"He was outstanding," Express manager Jackie Moore said. "You take that last game with San Antonio into account, he's really making progress. He's starting to really take command of his pitches."
He was aided by a minor explosion by the Express bats. Round Rock put together a 13-hit attack, led by a three-hit night by Eric Cole and two-hit nights from John Tamargo, Anthony Acevedo, Tommy Whiteman and Gavin Wright.
Houlton moves to 3-2. David Hooten (3-3) took the loss.
The Express well have the inaugural series with the Frisco RoughRiders starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
