May 29, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

Third baseman Raul Chavez was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as the East Division leading New Orleans Zephyrs downed the Edmonton Trappers 6-3 Thursday night at TELUS Field. It was the second win in three tries for the Zephyrs in their only trip north of the border this season. New Orleans began the day with a one-game lead over the Nashville Sounds in the East. The Trappers have never beaten the Zephyrs in a season series and will not do so again this campaign as the clubs play just one more time. Thursday night's loss drops Edmonton's all-time record against New Orleans to 13-26. The Trappers have had a tough time against the top clubs in the PCL this season. With the loss the club is now 11-20 against teams that currently have records above .500. The Trappers will try to salvage the split in this four-game series in Friday night's series finale. Edmonton will conclude this eight-game homestand with four games against the Memphis Redbirds beginning on Saturday night.

New Orleans got on the board first with a single run in the top of the second inning. Catcher John Buck led off with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a single by Royce Huffman. Raul Chavez then grounded out, plating Buck from third with the first run of the contest. The Zephyrs scored twice more in the third inning off Edmonton starter Eric Knott (2-4). Eric Bruntlett led off the inning with a single to right field. Dave Matranga followed with a bunt single to put runners at first and second. Left fielder Henri Stanley then singled to left field, scoring Bruntlett and moving Matranga to second. With two out in the frame Chavez punched a single to right field, scoring Matranga with the final run of the inning. Zephyrs' starter Doug Sessions (1-1) allowed only one baserunner in the first four innings and took a no-hitter into the fifth where the Trappers finally got to him for one run. Edwards Guzman started the inning with a single to right. Valentino Pascucci drew a walk to put runners at first and second and Randy Knorr singled with one out in the frame, scoring Guzman with the first run of the game for Edmonton.

Chavez restored the Zephyrs three-run lead with a leadoff home run in the sixth inning. The blast to left field, which came off Knott, was the first home run surrendered by a Trapper starter at TELUS Field in May. Edmonton plated another run in the bottom of the sixth, but it could have been more. Terrmel Sledge drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a base hit by Guzman. Pascucci then smashed a double to the gap in left-center. Sledge scored on the play, but Guzman was tossed out at home plate to end the inning and the Trappers rally. With one out in the top of the seventh Matranga hit his first home run of the season to give the Zephyrs a 5-2 lead. Edmonton loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh inning, but Luis Figueroa popped out and Scott Hodges lined into a double play to end the threat. Sledge led off the eighth inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, and moved to third on Guzman's third base hit of the game. Sledge scored the Trappers third run of the game with two out in inning when reliever Rob Stanifer tossed a wild pitch. The Zephyrs rounded out the scoring in the top of the ninth inning with a single run.
