Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Bowling Green, KY (April 24, 2009) - The Bowling Green Hot Rods trailed the West Virginia Power for just a half inning of Friday night's game at Bowling Green Ballpark, and used timely hitting along with some good defense to take the series finale with a 4-2 victory.
West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on Chase D'Arnaud's two-out RBI single. The Hot Rods scored twice in the bottom of the inning to steal the lead. Jake Jeffries reached on a fielder's choice to plate Bowling Green's first run of the night. With runners at the corners and one out, Jeffries stole second base, and Anthony Scelfo stole home on Andrew Walker's throw to second in an attempt to catch Jeffries.
The Hot Rods scored two more in the sixth inning. Isaias Velasquez smacked a triple with one out to score Mike Sheridan. Velasquez scored later in the inning on Jeremy Beckham's single. West Virginia plated their final run in the top of the eighth. Robbie Grossman was on second base when D'Arnaud hit a ground ball to third baseman Jeremy Beckham. Beckham's throw brought first baseman Mike Sheridan off the bag, allowing D'Arnaud to reach, and Grossman scored all the way from second base on the play.
Neil Shank (1-1) retired the first ten batters he faced and allowed just an unearned run on one hit over three and two thirds to get the victory. Jamie Bagley (3) tossed a scoreless inning and a third to get the save. Tyler Cox (0-2) pitched pretty well, but suffered the loss. He allowed just a pair of runs on five hits over five innings.
West Virginia fell to 4-12 with the loss and the Hot Rods improved to 8-8 after the win. Chase D'Arnaud delivered another multi-hit performance. D'Arnaud went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He led the team with nine hits on the road trip, going 9-for-24 on the eight day trip. Robbie Grossman also hit safely twice, going 2-for-4 and scored his fifth run of the trip.
The Power will begin a four game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Right hander Johnny Dorn (1-1, 3.71) will start for Greensboro and the Power will counter with right hander Duke Welker (0-2, 5.14). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
