April 24, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Everything seemed to be working for the Greenville Drive (10-6) Friday night in Kannapolis, North Carolina. All nine batters recorded a hit and the duo of Brock Huntzinger and Armando Zerpa combined to shutout the Intimidators (10-6) 8-0 in the series finale at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
In earning his first victory of the season, Huntzinger (1-0) scattered four hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen over 5.2 scoreless innings while fanning three before turning the game over to the reliable Zerpa. The Venezuelan was perfect in the final 3.1 innings with a strikeout, earning his first save and extending his scoreless inning streak to 12.0.
With Huntzinger and Zerpa dominant on the mound, the Drive's first run in the top of the fourth, coming on Will Middlebrooks' RBI-groundout, was all they needed. However, Greenville exploded for seven runs in a three-inning span to pull away.
The Drive continued to be successful in two out situations, as Anthony Rizzo and Ryan Lavarnway hit back-to-back doubles for a run in the sixth. An inning later, Ryan Dent delivered a two-out, two-run triple.
Three of Greenville's four runs in the eighth came with two outs as Jon Hee laced a two-run triple and scored on Mitch Dening's single. Pete Hissey gave the Drive their first run of the frame on a one-out, RBI-single.
Offensively, the Drive pounded out a season-high 15 hits with all nine batters recording a hit, as well as either knocking in or scoring a run in the contest. Rizzo and Tejeda led the onslaught with three hits apiece while Hissey and Lavarnway each tallied two hits.
The Drive, who are a ½ game behind the first place Savannah Sand Gnats, now travel to Asheville, North Carolina for a two-game set with the Tourists. Greenville will send right-hander Stolmy Pimentel to the mound as Asheville counters with right-hander Dan Houston.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, April 28th for four games with the Savannah Sand Gnats, affiliate of the New York Mets. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
NOTES: Opposing batters are now hitting just .027 (1-for-37) off Armando Zerpa...this was the Drive's fourth shutout of the season
