CHARLESTON, SC - The RiverDogs were bamboozled by a quartet of GreenJacket hurlers for the 8-4 defeat in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 4,381 fans at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the defeat, the RiverDogs fall to 8-7 while the GreenJackets improve to 4-11.
Charleston jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Melky Mesa reached on a fielding error by GreenJackets third baseman Charlie Culberson. Following a walk to Mitch Abeita that advanced Mesa to second, Mike Lyon hit into a fielder's choice that eliminated Abeita at second while Mesa scurried to third. Garrison Lassiter would knock in Mesa on the second fielder's choice in the inning.
Augusta responded to take a 4-1 advantage in the home half of the third frame. Culberson smacked an infield single to lead off the inning and then sprinted to third when Wendell Farley singled to center. A wild pitch by Charleston starter Brett Marshall allowed Culberson to score as Farley scampered into second. Ehire Adrianza dropped a bunt single that moved Farley to third, for Dom Duggan who lifted a sacrifice fly to left that plated Farley. Ryan Lormand added a single to left while Adrianza sprinted to third. Mike Loberg lined a single to right that scored Adrianza and advanced Lormand to second. Josh Mazzola lined a third consecutive single to center field that drove in Lormand for the inning's fourth run.
The GreenJackets continued to hammer RiverDogs pitching as Augusta extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Adrianza smacked a leadoff single only to scamper into second after RiverDogs first baseman Brian Baisely committed a fielding error on Duggan's ground ball. With runners on first and second, Lormand laced a single up the middle that scored Adrianza while Duggan dashed to second. Duggan and Lormand moved into scoring position when RiverDogs catcher Mitch Abeita's pickoff attempt sailed to the outfield that set up Mazzola who doubled to left and plated both Duggan and Lormand.
The RiverDogs cut into the GreenJackets lead 7-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Mesa reached on a catcher's interference and then stole second only to circle home when Lassiter singled up the middle.
Charleston tacked an additional run in the visiting half of seventh frame to slice into Augusta's lead 7-3. Ray Kruml leadoff the inning with a walk only to sprint to third after Brewer grounded out for David Adams who would knock in Kruml on a groundout.
The GreenJackets reclaimed a five-run advantage 8-3 in the home half of the seventh inning. Lormand singled up the middle only to slide into third after Loberg singled to left. Mazzola sliced the third single of the inning that plated Lomand.
The RiverDogs added a final run in the eighth when Adams singled to left center. After a wild pitched moved Adams into scoring position, Abeita singled past the shortstop that drove in Adams.
Augusta starter Kelvin Marte (1-1) set the tone for the GreenJackets while on the hill. The 6-0 southpaw stymied the RiverDogs bats for one unearned run and scattered four hits while he walked three and collected a strike out.
Charleston starter Brett Marshall (0-2) struggled over his five innings on the mound. The right-hander was smacked for 10 hits and was responsible for six earned runs while only striking out one.
The RiverDogs were held the lowest hit total of the season with six hits, but Charleston did have its opportunities to score on the night as the Dogs left 13 men on the bases.
The RiverDogs will look to win look to regain their winning ways against the Savannah Sand Gnats Saturday night. Charleston kicks off the short homestand with right-hander Andrew Brackman (0-2, 5.06 ERA) while Savannah is scheduled to send righty Kyle Allen (0-1, 10.80 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park
