Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release
PENSACOLA, FL -- The Pensacola Ice Pilots ran into a hot goaltender and strong defense and dropped a 3-0 decision to the Charlotte Checkers tonight (Tuesday) at The Hangar.
The Ice Pilots defense held strong through most of the first period, until the Checkers scored two goals right at the end. Evan Lindsay stopped 13 of 15 shots, and the score was 2-0 Charlotte.
The second period saw both teams evenly matched on defense, and neither team was able to score a goal. Dan Sullivan had a breakaway in the second period but was denied by goaltender Alex Westlund. The Ice Pilots failed to score on two power play opportunities.
The Ice Pilots had two power play opportunities to start the third period and couldn't generate many scoring chances on Westlund. The best chance came when Torry Gadja one timer from the slot area was gloved by the young goaltender.
The Checkers were held scoreless until 19:20, when Jan Vodrazka slung one into the empty net after the Ice Pilots had attempted a late rally. The goal rounded out the scoring.
Dan Sullivan, had four shots on goal while John Hecimovic, Sergei Ogorodnikov, Torry Gadja and Derrick Byfuglien each had three. Damen Rycroft had seven shots for the Checkers. Both teams were a combined 0 for 9 on the power play, including six by the Ice Pilots alone.
Checkers goaltender Alex Westlund recorded the shutout, while Lindsay took the loss. The Ice Pilots are now 19-41-1-3 for 42 points, while the Checkers improved their record to 35-24-1-2 for 73 points.
