Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH - The Bombers fend off the Toledo Storm 3-2 in front of 2,433 fans at the E.J. Nutter Center, to take lone possession of second place in the North Division.
The Bombers controlled the first period until the 8:41 mark. A let down in the Bombers' defensive zone gave Andrew Martin his 10th goal of the season and the Toledo Storm the 1-0 lead. The Storm kept momentum through the rest of the first period.
The second period continued the same until the 7:21 mark when Bombers' defenseman Corey LeClair passed the puck to forward Petr Pohl who found a streaking Paul Kelly. The Assistant Captain then threw on the breaks, sending two of the Storm's defensemen flying by. Kelly then put a shot off of goaltender Ervins Mustukovs pads, got his rebound and put the puck into the back of the net. Only 31 seconds later, Kelly struck again after receiving a beautiful pass from Pohl and right winger Bryce Anderson. The momentum had shifted to the Bombers and Kelly almost had his third goal of the night but the Storm's Matt Zultek hooked Kelly and was sent to the box at the 10:36 mark. It was at the end of that penalty that the Bombers were firing shot after shot on Mustukovs and Brent Walton fired a rebound from Justin Maiser and Trevor Hendrikx. It seemed like the period would end with a 3-1 Bomber lead but at the 18:37 the Bombers were unable to clear the puck and Zultek rang a shot off the post of Bombers' goaltender Terry Denike. The shot trickled out to defenseman Denis Kirstein and he recorded his first professional goal, putting the puck into an open net. The period would end 3-2.
Despite pressure from Toledo, the Bombers were able to fend off the Storm with aggressive forechecking and quick clears in the defensive zone. Denike turned away all nine of Toledo's shots to hold on to the 3-2 lead.
The victory gives the Bombers sole possession of second place in the North Division, still three points behind the first place Cincinnati Cyclones.
Individual game tickets are on sale now. The Bombers return to the Nutter Center on Friday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Johnstown Chiefs.
