Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 13, 2012) -- The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored nine runs over the final three innings to pull away from the Kannapolis Intimidators, 13-2, on Wednesday night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Greensboro (43-23) took the series over Kannapolis (30-36), two games to one. The Grasshoppers pounded out 18 hits, matching the most allowed by the Intimidators this season, a march set by Greensboro last month.

Grasshoppers reliever Jose Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win with 1 and 2/3 scoreless relief innings in his season debut, and James Nygren spun 3 and 1/3 hitless frames for his league lead-tying 10th save. Intimidators starter Blair Walters (3-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 and 2/3 innings.

Kannapolis struck first when Mark Haddow led off the second inning with an infield single, moved to second when Kevin Dubler walked, advanced to third on a Martin Medina bunt-single, and David Herbek's sacrifice fly brought Haddow home for a 1-0 lead.

Greensboro leapfrogged Kannapolis with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Brent Keys led off with a bunt-single, advanced to second on an Intimidators error and stole third. Josh Adams dropped a single into left field to cash Keys, tying the game 1-1. Adams went first-to-third on a Matt Smith single. Two batters later, Terrence Dayleg grounded up the third base line on a controversial play that gave Greensboro the lead. Rangel Ravelo threw home to Martin Medina, catching Adams in a pickle on the third base line, but Medina was ruled to have missed the tag, allowing Adams to score the go-ahead run. Ryan McIntyre added a two-run double for a 4-1 lead.

Intimidators shortstop David Herbek doubled down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, stole third and came home on a passed ball to cut the Grasshoppers lead to 4-2.

The Intimidators threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases with two outs against Rodriguez, but Nygren came on to retire Herbek and leave the bases loaded.

The Grasshoppers then pulled away with four runs in the top of the seventh, two more in the eighth and three in the ninth.

The Intimidators wrap up the first half of the season with a four-game road trip to Delmarva. The Intimidators return from the South Atlantic League All-Star Break on Thursday, June 21, with an eight- game home stand against Delmarva and Hickory.
