'Dads Set Suns with 5-3 Win in 10 Innings

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hickory Crawdads topped the Hagerstown Suns, 5-3, in 10 innings, before 1,109 fans at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown on Wednesday night .
Hagerstown SS Jason Martinson swung the Suns (40-25) into the early lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. However, LHP Victor Payano kept the Suns from adding to the lead throughout the remainder of his six-inning start, while striking out seven batters.
The Crawdads (35-30) came racing back in the top of the seventh on RBI base hits by SS Luis Sardinas and RF Zach Cone, lifting the 'Dads into the 2-1 lead. C Jorge Alfaro stretched the lead to 3-1 with a solo home run in the top of the eighth.
The Suns refused to go down quietly, tying the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against RHP Arlett Mavare (W, 2-2). With two on and no outs, Alfaro fielded a sacrifice bunt by LF Billy Burns, but misfired the throw to first base, enabling LF Caleb Ramsey to score and DH Brett Newsome to take third on the play. CF Brian Goodwin then bounced an RBI fielder's choice up the middle, tying the game, 3-3.
Hickory, though, regained the lead right away in the top of the 10th inning. Facing RHP Aaron Barrett (L, 3-2) with one down, Alfaro ripped a single to left field. After a balk moved Alfaro to second, CF Chris Grayson worked a walk to put two runners on. They both moved up ninety feet on a ground out by LF Jordan Akins, and then Alfaro raced home from third on a passed ball by C Cole Leonida. Grayson took third base on the passed ball, before sprinting in on an RBI infield single by 1B Jhonny Gomez, giving the 'Dads the 5-3 lead.
Crawdads RHP Phil Klein (S, 3) then slammed the door on the Suns with a scoreless bottom of the 10th, closing the 5-3 win for Hickory in extra innings.
