Sand Gnats Sweep Twin Bill with RiverDogs

SAVANNAH, GA- The Savannah Sand Gnats swept both games of a doubleheader with the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday night, winning game one 3-1 and game two 3-2 in South Atlantic League action at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The RiverDogs now stand at 38-25 on the season and Savannah's record is 37-26 so far this year.

The first game was a resumption of the game that was suspended on Sunday night in Charleston due to rain in the fourth inning with Savannah leading 1-0. The Sand Gnats had scored their run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Travis Taijeron (1-2, 2 RBI, run). When the game resumed, the RiverDogs had runners on first and second with one out and Angelo Gumbs at the plate. Gumbs worked a walk to load the bases and bring up Casey Stevenson (3-3, RBI), who singled back through the middle to tie the game.

Bryan Mitchell took over the pitching chore for Charleston in the top of the fifth and kept the game tied until the seventh. In that inning, Mitchell (4-5) allowed a leadoff single to T.J. Rivera and, with one out, Taijeron drove one over the head of Mason Williams in center field for a triple. Brian Harrison (3-5, RBI) then tacked on another run with an RBI single to center, extending the lead to two runs.

Savannah's pitching staff kept the RiverDogs from being able to mount a comeback. Randy Fontanez (1-0) picked up the game from where it had left off on Sunday and allowed only two hits in three and two-thirds innings. After a scoreless eighth from Chasen Bradford, Jeffrey Walters struck out the side in the ninth for his second save of the year.

In game two, which was a seven inning game, the Sand Gnats took an early 1-0 lead when a first inning double by Rivera (3-3, RBI) scored Camden Maron. In the second, Charlie Thurber lashed an RBI triple into the right field corner that brought in Savannah's second run.

The RiverDogs got a run back in the third when Reymond Nunez and Kelvin De Leon hit back-to-back doubles to begin the frame. The teams then traded runs starting in the bottom of the fifth. Savannah scored a run in the fifth when Gregory Pron singled, was sacrificed to second and Maron lined an RBI single to right. Gary Sanchez (2-3, HR, RBI) brought Charleston back to within one in the sixth when he blasted his tenth home run of the year. That was as close as they would come, though. T.J. Chism fired a scoreless ninth inning for his 11th save of the year to complete the Sand Gnats doubleheader sweep.

The RiverDogs now head to Greensboro to start a four game series with the Grasshoppers. It will be the first meeting between these two teams in 2012 and game one features RiverDogs RHP Will Oliver (2-2, 4.25 ERA) facing Greensboro's RHP Austin Brice (5-2, 4.30 ERA) with first pitch time at 7:00 pm.
