Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Efficient pitching from the Greensboro Grasshoppers kept the Delmarva Shorebirds offense in check, delivering the Shorebirds a 4-1 loss on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Ryan Lillie (5-1) picked up the win for the Grasshoppers (28-28), pitching seven strong innings of one-run, four-hit ball while walking none and striking out seven. Brenan Hanifee (4-2) suffered the loss for the Shorebirds (30-26), allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Colton Hock notched his first save of the season in his two innings.
Greensboro continued the series trend of hot starts. Jose Devers singled with one out, then Lazaro Alonso doubled him in with two outs to make it 1-0. Later on in the third, Devers came through again with a one-out single and quickly stole second base. Jhonny Santos followed with a line drive into center that got past a sun-blinded Zach Jarrett and rolled all the way back to wall for a triple. Devers scored to make it 2-0 Grasshoppers.
The Shorebirds found their only offense success against Lillie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Will Robertson shot a one-out double to left and advanced to third on a Kirvin Moesquit groundout. Branden Becker then delivered a line shot up the middle allowing, Robertson to get Delmarva within 2-1.
Jarrett followed with an infield single to put two on with two out, but Lillie coaxed a groundout from Seamus Curran to end the threat. Lillie went back to work with a 1-2-3 seventh, and Hock came in to strike out the side in the eighth.
The Grasshoppers found insurance runs in the top of the ninth. J.C. Millan led off with a nine-pitch walk and quickly stole second. Two batters later, Sam Castro came through with an RBI double, plating Millan. Thomas Jones followed with another double to left center, scoring Castro to make it 4-1.
Devers finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base for the Grasshoppers, while Santos went 2-for-5 with a triple, RBI, and stolen base.
Becker put up a 2-for-4 evening and was responsible for the only Shorebird RBI. Robertson went 2-for-3 with a double and run, notching two of the four hits the Shorebirds managed off Lillie.
Delmarva will look to avoid the sweep on Thursday, turning to Cameron Bishop (4-3, 3.50) against Greensboro's Trevor Rogers (0-1, 8.10). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. The first 1,000 fans in attendance on Thursday will receive a Jonathan Schoop Replica Jersey presented by Delaware Express. It's also a KISS 95.9 Thirsty Thursday presented by University Village at Salisbury and Maryland Pride Thursday. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
