Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 7, 2010) - J.J. Hoover threw seven shutout innings and the Dash lost its series opener to Myrtle Beach 5-2 on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Pelicans broke open a 1-0 game with three runs in the seventh inning to pick up their fifth straight win over Winston-Salem.

The game started as a pitchers' duel between Stephen Sauer and Hoover. The two matched zeroes through the first four innings.

Myrtle Beach (6-8, 32-52) broke through in the top of the fifth when Sauer gave up three straight singles to start the inning. The third base hit, off the bat of Cole Miles, brought home L.V. Ware to make it 1-0 Pelicans.

The Dash (8-5, 51-32), meanwhile, could not solve Hoover (6-5), who did not allow a base hit for 15 consecutive batters to finish his outing.

Sauer (5-6) ran into trouble again in the top of the seventh. Matt Kennelly, Samuel Sime, and Ware all singled to start the frame. Ware's hit scored Kennelly to give Myrtle a 2-0 lead and knocked Sauer out of the ballgame. Hector Santiago entered the game and loaded the bases on a fielder's choice grounder back to the pitcher. After striking out Mycal Jones, Santiago walked Cory Harrilchak to force in a run, and then gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to Luis Sumoza. The Pelicans scored three times in the inning to go ahead 4-0.

Winston-Salem finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. After Luis Avilan walked Brandon Short with one out, Eduardo Escobar reached on a fielding error by Mycal Jones. Both Short and Escobar scored when Jon Gilmore bounced a base hit through the right side to cut the deficit to 4-2. Gilmore got to third base on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice, but Ozzie Lewis could not drive him in, grounding out to the pitcher to end the inning.

The Pelicans added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Sumoza hit an RBI single off Drew O'Neil to get the Myrtle lead to three runs.

Ty'Relle Harris pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. He preserved the win for Hoover, who allowed just four hits and one walk over seven shutout innings. Hoover struck out a season-high eight batters on the night.

Sauer suffered his second straight tough-luck loss. After allowing one run over six innings, his line ballooned after giving up three hits and three runs without retiring a man in the seventh. Overall, he gave up four runs on nine hits in six-plus innings.

Winston-Salem has now lost five straight games against Myrtle Beach, the team with the worst overall record in the league. The Dash won six of the teams' first seven match-ups, but has not beaten the Pelicans since the 20-inning win on May 19.

The Dash looks to even the series and end its skid against the Birds on Thursday night. RHP Terry Doyle (4-3, 3.49) squares off with RHP Julio Teheran (3-3, 2.92) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio broadcast can be heard on www.wsdash.com beginning at 6:45.
