Frederick Keys News Release
On one of the hottest nights in 2010, the Keys (7-6, 48-35) were defeated by the Potomac Nationals (6-7, 37-46), 7-4. With first pitch temperature on Wednesday night at 98 degrees, the P-Nats bats were hot from the start. C Derek Norris hit a two-run homer in the first to give Potomac a lead they would never relinquish.
Trailing by two runs before the Keys even stepped the plate, Frederick got on the board in the second and cut the Potomac lead to one following a RBI double by SS Pedro Florimon. Florimon's double drove home 3B Billy Rowell who reached on a double one pitch prior.
The Nationals countered quickly as they scored three runs in the top of the third and ousted LHP Cole McCurry from the game. RF Michael Burgess, CF Nick Moresi, and DH Tyler Moore each drove in a run in the third.
On the night, McCurry allowed five earned runs on four hits over 2.2 innings pitched. He walked four and struck out three in his first loss since May 8th.
RF Ronnie Welty, who extended his hitting streak to season-high 12 games in the first inning, hit a towering blast in the bottom of the third that cleared all three tiers of fencing in rightfield. Welty's team-best 10th homerun of the season was his first round tripper since May 29th.
The Keys final threatened in the bottom of the fifth but were only able to bring home one run. With one out and the bases loaded, Welty hit a ground ball to left side of the infield but 3B Dan Lyons could not come up with the play. Pedro Florimon scored from the third to cut the deficit to four. LHP Cory VanAllen came into relieve RHP Trevor Holder following the Welty grounder. VanAllen, who entered the game with an ERA of 5.46, struck out 1B Joe Mahoney and got 2B Miguel Abreu to fly out to rightfield to end the inning and strand the bases loaded of Keys.
Frederick added a run in the ninth inning on a RBI single by CF Xavier Avery but fell 7-4 to the Nationals.
VanAllen improved his record to 2-3 on the year following his flawless night. VanAllen did not allow a runner to reach while striking out four over 1.2 innings pitched. Cole McCurry fell to 3-3 in the loss.
Frederick will look to bounce back on Thursday afternoon as they host Potomac in game two of the three-game set. RHP Ryan O'Shea (5-3, 3.17) will start for Frederick while RHP Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 0.00) will make his second rehab start after undergoing Tommy John Surgery last July. First pitch is set 12:00 p.m. on Camp Day at Harry Grove Stadium.
